Default Film classification and why it's so corrupt

I have just come across this article in the Telegraph.

MPs speak out over Batman's violence in The Dark Knight - Telegraph

It always tends to pay dividends when something looks a bit corrupt to find out the reasons. Now doing a Google search on 'Sue Clark', to find out who the hell this woman is reveals some interesting facts. Please read these with the idea in mind that if you wanted to deliberately increase the amount of violent and obscene films to degrade the minds of the young then how would you do it.
Quote:
How do you source your game examiners?

Sue Clark: We advertise in the national press and in some games publications

Where do they examine?

Sue Clark: In our offices in Soho Square...

What qualifications do they need?

Sue Clark: They have to be good at playing games. There are no 'formal' qualifications for being a BBFC examiner, but you do have to have a good level of education and a good grasp of English as you are required to produce well argued written reports.

You also have to have an interest in film because games examiners don't just classify games

What does an examiner get paid?

Sue Clark: The salary scale is £33.950 to £45,758
(remember no formal qualifications to watch films that you are already a fan of!)

Is there an even gender / race split?

Sue Clark: No, we have a total of 32 examiners of whom 13 are women. We specifically appoint examiners who speak Chinese and Indian languages because we classify a lot a material from South Asia and China.

(The Chinese love a bit of torture!)

You say that game examiners also examine films. Are game examiners hired specifically for their games knowledge?

Sue Clark: Yes and then trained up to do film.

BBFC Watch: Rating Games for a living
Do you see how it is done now?

I'm not quite sure I get your point here Baron.

How do you classify a film? Apparently they are left mainly to form their own opinion of it. However someone who is appointed on the strength of being a good video games player to judge a film is hardly representative of good taste. To be an a video games player these days means playing lots of very violent games. That desensitises the person in relation to their opinions about violence. Also the entire circus is funded by the film industry and has very few legal guidelines other than they need to prove it is damaging and their decisions can be overturned if they fail to prove it.

You should take a look at that link I posted. It's a propaganda website pushing anti-censorship and is quite ugly in places but there is some useful information on the process and an interview with the civil servant who is in overall control. Some of the stuff they have recently passed is unbelievably sick though. Indeed it is so sick I'd keep well away from reading about it.

Personally I'm not a great fan of censorship. I'd say putting warnings for children is needed but I wouldn't censor things like this for adults.

bbfc - the official website of the bbfc. classification for entertainment, movies and video games

The official view.

I have read it in the past when I applied for a post as I thought that the money was good for watching the latest releases. I write a lot of reports so wouldn't worry about that. It turned out they were only recruiting Tamil and Mandarin speakers IIRC and my application was wasted at that time.

They have to check every film shown in this country so someone has to sit through an awful lot of Bollywood.

I'm not sure it's sinister paying people good money to work in central London. Soho is a cool district with excellent nightlife and good restaurants. I'd work there.

I like a bit of film classification. Not censorship, but classification.

Reason? There's just some things I don't want to see and I should know about these before I rent the film, not halfway through it.

If you were assaulted and ended up with a broken arm you might think you were attacked. If the assault were a psychological one and a gradual process then the very thing being attacked, i.e. your mind, would be in no fit state to understand it has been damaged. If everyone around you were suffering the same condition you might not even notice your mind had been broken. Even if you don't go to the cinema you might still suffer from other people with damaged minds that think it is a fun thing to do to stick a knife in you and record it on their mobile phone. Chances are you would take the BBC line and not realise the link between damaged minds and how they got that way in the first place. You might just think it is just inevitable or just how it is these days. With a third world education you would not be capable of rational thought and just go by your impressions and what the BBC tells you. Meanwhile those with a vested interest know they have it easy.
