White men could be stopped from getting jobs under controversial government plans to allow employers to hire ethnic minority and female candidates ahead of them.

Harriet Harman, the Minister for Women, has launched a consultation into proposals to scrap current laws that ban employers from taking race or sex into consideration when interviewing job candidates.

The plan is described as "positive action" rather than "positive discrimination" because it would not allow a candidate with worse job credentials to be given preferential treatment.

Instead, the measure involves giving employers the right to take race or sex into consideration when choosing between candidates with exactly the same qualifications.

The proposed change in the law could also affect universities, allowing them to select more female students in subjects areas such as the sciences where men have traditionally dominated.

Critics insisted these decisions were already being taken by employers and recruitment officers keen to boost numbers of women and ethnic minorities.

However, Miss Harman is said to believe radical action is needed to help all disadvantaged members of the community gain their full potential.

A spokesman for the Federation of Small Business said: "We would urge caution over the prospect of more Government regulation, which always causes problems for small businesses, which do not have human resources departments to steer them through the legal minefields."

Ann Widdecombe, the Conservative MP and leading campaigner against all-women shortlists in Parliament, said: "In addition to being superfluous, this law would be detrimental because it suggests that women and members of ethnic minorities need special treatment.

"I have always said that every women MP should be able to look every male MP all the way up to the Prime Minister in the eye and know that she did not get there as a result of special treatment. Women at all levels of business need to be able to say the same thing in the boardroom."

Meanwhile, Katherine Rake, of the Fawcett Society, which campaigns for equal pay, said it was unclear how Miss Harman's proposals would stand up in court.

Theresa May, the shadow women's minister, said Miss Harman ought to be concentrating on the real problems facing women in work, such as the gender pay gap.

It is one thing to protect minorities or women from discrimination, but when the endemic population is discriminate against - it is very disturbing. Apart from the fact that the employer is not getting the most able to fill the job, reducing their competitiveness, the only explanation is that the government are intent on increasing the numbers here from different cultures, despite the tensions that this is bound cause.

Is the same thing happening in Scotland?

This latest form of blatant racism against white English men is outrageous, this was one of the talking points on The Write Stuff on C5 this morning, Yasmin Ali Ba Ba Brown was in agreement with this new proposal. Can't stand the woman, she's made a career out of her hatred for this country and its men. This could be a blessing in disguise though, working class white men have had the rug pulled from beneath them and now it's the turn of the middle classes, their reaction will be interesting.

Good point, I have had personal experience of organisations that have taken a nose dive due to positive (racist) discrimination. I protested against one of them last year with a scathing letter of complaint to their Head Office and had the woman in question sacked who thought she was untouchable. What she didn't realise was that I had a computer with quick access to their online customer charter and of course 3 brain cells.

all discrimination is negative discrimination, there is no such thing as positive discrimination. i would like labour to explain how thats not plain and simply RACIST. people should be chosen by their ability to do the job, not age, race, gender or sexual preference.

what would be funny is if some high profile politician just straight up said, "how is this not a racist policy?"

You have to remember that "racism", like "sexism", is a political term and can mean, and exclude, anything the PC brigade, aka cultural Marxists, wish. So, according to their warped minds only whites can be racist and only men can be sexist. It's all about being a member of a victim group, eg of ethnic minorities, women, gays etc which, by PC definition, are powerless and oppressed - hence the need in the PC mind to confront, oppress and suppress those they see as wielding power, ie white men. To the PC mind, calling a black person racist is itself racist. All of which is, of course, total nonsense to those of us who live in the real world.

there was a thing on the radio about this before, and pretty much every person speaking about it "slammed it down" so i doubt this racist law will pass.

Well we the British are the enemy of the state and the new world order so I would have thought it was totally justified.
