One cannot help but think that a head of state elected in the French manner but elected for "life" would be far more useful and representative than an in-bred francophonic blue-blood that was originally foisted upon us by an act of agression. In fact, monarchs are nothing more than mafiosa style families demanding loyalty from its mobsters and servile citizens, using brute force and violence to enforce their will. This has been the basis of 'our' monarchs power historically and to their accumulation of wealth and land.

Good riddence to them when the time comes.
I don't know whose history you have been reading but it ain't ours.

They'll regret the day they ask me.

twizzel, Your parents also failed in a much more spectacular way. It appears that you were not taught from birth to be proud of our country's (possessive singular) great language. Your posts are littered with solecisms. You don't even know how to use the English language. It's a fact that any educated person reading your posts would consider you to be functionally illiterate.

No, you silly man. In his case, and with every one of my children, I've succeeded. My children think for themselves (which is the source of some spectacular debates on occasion) and cannot be brainwashed by anybody, not even you.

He is very proud to be British. His ancestry covers most parts of the British Isles as it happens. Most of his relatives have been awarded more medals than you, earned by serving their country in real combat in real conflicts. Those that were not awarded medals were proud to serve their country in other ways.

He has learnt our history, including the bits that show us up in a less than civilised light, since he could read. That, unfortunately, is the nub of the problem. He sees little to be proud of in 21st century Britain, a view shared by many of his age group. He sees unemployment rising, inflation rising, house prices rising. He sees a decreasing chance of getting a job based on the degree he will be studying for. He sees no chance of getting his own home. He sees little hope for change in the next 20 years, if at all.

He sees old men trying to prosecute the dead rather than help him and his generation build a country they can be proud of. He sees nothing in your pet theories that benefit him and he wants none of it.

Now, how would you motivate his age-group to vote for you? By telling him his parents failed to bring him up properly? Be my guest. He's way too polite to tell you what he really feels, but you might just be surprised at how articulate he can be in his disapproval.

To think that it is all great is naive. To think that it is all bad is also naive.

History should be taught as it happened, then the individuals can make the moral choice.

I can think of many great things that people in Britain have done, I can also think of many bad things too.
