incorrect. world war 1 DID end in a peace treaty, it was called the treaty of versailles and was signed on 28/6/1919. There was an armistice prior to this, of course, but an armistice is a cessation of hostilities and NOT an 'end to a war' in the true sense - which was why the treaty of versailles was so important.

In fact, it was the terms agreed in the versailles treaty that led largely to economic chaos on germany - out of which, of course, arose national socialism.

The treaty of Versailles was not a peace treaty, it is widely presented as being but it was in fact a peace settlement.

It preceded a formal peace treaty and the normalisation of relations between Germany and all of the nations that had been engaged in war against it which would have included normalisation of affairs and relationships between Germany and the ROW.

In fact such a stage was never reached, though various steps were met such as the lesser known treaty of Berlin which was a US / Germany treaty, and later the Lausanne Conference outcome enabled the bulk of the transfer of goods and materials (that formed a part of the package of reparations required of Germany) to commence.

Even then all of the requirements of the Treaty of Versailles were never to be met and consequently the establishment of a legal state of peace was never met, at best what was achieved could only be described as the absence of active war.

Re WW2

I met in Dundee, ZOE POLANSKA PALMER, a Russian Christian who wrote,
Yalta Victim a book.

She was liberated from a camp by Brittish who then sent all the Russian prisoners back to Russia where they were murdered.

She had no good word to say about the Brittish or indeed the J***.

She gave me in 2002? a signed copy of her book which unfortunatly I have lost.

Dear Sir,

My friend Mrs Zoe Polanska-Palmer has passed me a copy of your reply dated 20th September to her letter to the Foreign Office of 30thAugust.

Mrs Polanska-Palmer was fifteen years old at the time, and had experienced in Auschwilt and Dachau horrors such as you in your commuter train cannot dream of. Yet you presume to tell her what happened on, that dreadful day in June 1945. The dead will not lie easy so long as people like you and Mrs Mackenzie hold office in this country.

Your insulting denial that this event occurred places the Foreign Office on a par with those who seek to deny the Nazi Holocaust. You are unmistakably seeking to brand Mrs Polanska-Palmer a liar, since as she informed you she was a victim of the events to which I have alluded. In fact she was so badly injured during the attack, as to owe her escape to the intervention of a British MO, Dr Pinching (a tape-recorded account of whose experiences I have in the archives your associate Lord Aldington is seeking with your assistance to acquire). Presumably you regard Dr Pinching and all the other witnesses, whether British, Russian, Austrian, German, or Yugoslav, as liars also.

Setting this aside, your pretence 'that we were not aware of any evidence to support his [my] allegations that British soldiers in Austria at the time had committed "savage crime" is as plain a lie as can be conceived. You may seek to dispute the evidence (though I do not for a moment suppose you have any intention of attempting anything so ridiculous), but you cannot possibly pretend that you in Whitehall are alone in Britain unaware of its existence.
