Default Metric Road Signs

There is a creeping tendency towards Metrication in many areas, but one I've noticed recently is the putting of metric distances on road signs. I noticed this at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, but more recently on the A59, outside the gate of the British Aerospace Factory at Salmesbury of all places.

Has anybody noticed any other examples?
I find this offensive.

Every road sign measuring distance I've seen has always been in yards.

I understand the law still requires all official road signs to be in Miles and Yards. Over the last few years Tony Bennett and his mates have spent a considerable amount of time and money going round modifying or removing the illegal metric signs.

You are not the only one Stephen.

Have you contacted the relevant authorities regarding the above-named signs to find out who made the decision to put unwanted metric references on them; why they did so and if they had the permission of their employer to do so?

If I see one written in metric I will take the matter up by complaining immediately.

All road markings and signage are covered by both the Highway Code
Signs and markings : Directgov - Travel and transport
and
The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002
The Traffic Signs(Amendment) Regulations and General Directions 2005.
Imperial measurements are required by law so local authorities who erect signs that give measurements in Metric are breaking the law.
For example: If you saw a sign that read 'Maximum Speed 100kph' you are within your rights to ignore it because an illegal sign cannot be enforced (See above)
The above regulations can help you if you wish to challenge any parking restrictions implemented by your LA.

Does it matter?

I use metric measurements in my job without any problems.
