If challenged he'd probably say, " What I meant was there are more Police behind desks now than at any other time in History"!

I think they had a raw deal from the last 10 years plus of incompetant and irresponsible government in which they have like every other part of society forced to bow down to the evils of political correctness, been hampered by a blizzard of nitpicking paperwork and basically prevented from doing a decent job with stupid new laws and chaos and dirrision in public perceptions of them largely engineered by a government on a mad utopian power trip and suspicious of any power that may not obey them totally.

Those high visibility suits look ridiculous as well.

But really we aught to listen to them about what actually works in terms of policework that gets results, the guys who have been doing the job for 30 years and see the results in real terms should be listened to. like those senior police who propose to decriminilise the law on drug taking, they know what they are talking about, the present system doesn't work no matter how much money or man power you throw at it. It's a social and health issue not a criminal issue.
So i think the police have got to be able to get back to doing their job and not pandering to political correctness and government interference.

By "the streets" he means Downing Street and Parliament Street.

Wonder how the other 67% of their shift is taken up?

I saw a policeman on the beat around here a couple of months ago - the first time I have seen one on foot patrol in this area in about three years.

Most of the time (in this area) the police just seem to 'whizz' past in fast cars.
