The whiff of this forum's sneering 'anti-police' attitude is strong in the air today!

Apart for a couple of minor motor offences I have never been in trouble with the Police, but on three occasions when I really needed them (one a 999 call) they were worse than useless!
On the other hand I think the Police, Doctors , Nurses, Service men, all Rescue services, Teachers and highly skilled Tradesmen should be the highest paid workers, something for our young men and women to aspire to. If you pay peanuts you'll only attract Monkeys!

I saw one two days ago! I actually had to look twice, I couldn't believe my eyes.

One waved at me as he sped past our house in his Volvo the other day. Suppose this is as close to the 'stop and have a chat with the comunity' we are likely to get.

I have just finished reading 'Wasting Police Time' By PC David Copperfield - a pseudonym. He is the guy who was behind the famous Coppersblogspot that was banned from nearly every Police station in the land. Looking it up at work was considered a disciplinary offence by many Police forces! I take that as proof positive that it's a worthwhile read, and must be a bit too close to the truth for the authorities liking!

PC Copperfield complains bitterly about the waste of hours spent form filling etc. He rails against political correctness, deplores the target setting/meeting agenda that is followed, and reserves his greatest contempt for the benefits dependant underclass, describing them as bone idle.

The strange thing is almost every sentiment expressed by Copperfield has been broadly echoed by posters on this thread.

It's a great read, I'd recommend it.

We do occasionaly see proper coppers on patrol here in Borneo (Bournemouth) but they are mostly paired up with one of Blunket's Lookee Likey efforts. Not entirely sure what they do though. Certainly they didn't stop the recent murder next door but one, (realisticaly, how could they?) or the recent fatal heroin overdose who was found dead at the end of my street (realisticaly, how could they?). And when I found someones credit card in the street there was no one in at the local police station to take it in, or take details, so I shoved through the letterbox and hoped for the best. Obviously they couldn't disturb their important paperwork to take details from a member of the public. But I did once see them tell a cyclist to stop riding in the pedestrianised zone. So that's alright then!

Indeed, 'Wasting Police Time' is an excellent and revealing read. I would also highly recommend it. It was written by now retired PC Stuart Davidson of Staffordshire Police, who has since moved to Canada.

This quote sums it up nicely for me:

"Our police service is a means of social engineering, not a crime-fighting organisation. Consequently, the entry tests consist of little more than checking for a pulse, asking if the applicant is a racist and getting them to spell "diversity" correctly."

About 10 years ago when I lived near Ivybridge in Devon, there was a public car park next door to the Police station, less that a hundred yards and in clear view of the PS, vandals had smashed the steel car park meter with what must have been a sledge hammer. They were lucky they weren't caught! They could have had their hammer confiscated!
