Default Passport to a National Register

Propaganda for the National Identity Register has begun, I think registration begins soon in fact. Have you renewed your passport yet?

I think I will pass on this one and keep my Canadian passport. £40 instead of £72 the only downside is some immigrant giving me the third degree when I come back into the country. Funny thing is no other country gives it a second glance

Last time I came back from abroad, I was in Heathrow, Terminal 2 and I got filthy looks for having a British passport from the folks controlling (for want of a better word) the EC line!

However, five years' validity instead of ten.

Get a "certificate of entitlement" stamp placed in it: £20 from the IND office in Croydon AIUI.

I should have said C$40 . I did try a few years back to get the leave to remain stamp but got fed up sitting in a room full of immigrants. The thing is I suppose I just like bucking the system

Had a look - and also at the FAQ and Myths section. IF what is stated is true then I am beginning to wonder what all the fuss is about but being a cynical sod I naturally suspect there is more than meets the eye. Any observations anybody?

How is an identity card going to stop illegal immigration or stop terrorism ?

It all sounds very good but when you look beneath the surface you find out it's another big brother tactic designed to further control your freedoms....

Has the proposal by Immigration got anything to do with this do you think?

The European Commission is to put forward, on Tuesday 6 November, a proposal to collect personal data (PNR) on everyone flying in and out of the EU. Full-text of Commission's PNR proposal (pdf).
Statewatch News Online: EU PNR (passenger name record) scheme proposed

Who said the EU is not a Big Brother organisation and we have nothing to fear?

They were at $85 last I checked and that was at least a couple years ago (when I was still living in Canada, though that's moot since they wouldn't even issue me a residence permit let alone citizenship, same for the rest of the free world save maybe Switzerland).
