If the guy had this degree of mental illness, I wonder if it was fair on him in the first place putting him in the middle of society and expecting him to behave normally in the first place.

I don't blame the guy. I blame the system.

Absolutely, this type of crime has been more prevalent since the introduction of "care in the community", a cynical exercise in cost V risk by cross party government.

A lot of people have mental illnesses, many have schizophrenia.

They don't go around doing that. Many people who carry out sickening attacks have no mental illness, they are just evil. Many evil people use their mental illnesses as something to hide behind, something to conveniently excuse their appalling behaviour.

I think the man who attacked Mr Chaudhry should have his eye removed, isn't it called an eye for an eye? Of course it will make the whole world blind, if they don't change their ways it will.

If someone is so dangerous as not to be responsible for their own actions they would never be capable of getting out of their own front door, Gordon would have never got to that stage if he wasn't in some control. I don't believe the schizophrenia defence.

Some aspects of care in the community for adults with learning difficulties for instance have been succesfull but in other cases the results have been tragic, I would like to see the system overhauled but not complety abolished, I have seen the good it can do at first hand.

Care in the community for people with learning difficulties is a very good thing! It's not long ago that these people were "Kept out of sight"! It has been proved that a great many of these people with a little help can lead perfectly normal lives in the community. Some though should always be kept in a secure unit to protect the general public! These are the people who have a history of violence against others but are deemed by social workers to be "safe" to be released back into the community!
