Default The health and safety taliban never give up

1 March, Yorkshire Evening Post

Sinking feeling from EU

The health and safety taliban never give up. Now they've torpedoed a charity event that has been sailing quite happily for 35 years without incident and which last year alone raised £250,000.

It's a charity bath tub race in Shoreham in East Sussex organised by the locals whose ingenuity should be admired. What has happened every August is that cast-iron tubs are decorated and made seaworthy before they're launched and then rowed 9.6km (however long that is) along the River Adur.

Race chairman Tony Jelliman reckons he'd no option but to pull the plug because of increasing health and safety requirements and rising insurance rates. Me, I wish we were given the chance to abandon the European Union, that gravy train which forces ever more restrictions on our way of life, by casting Britain off from the ties with the Continent so we can once again be masters (and mistresses) of our own destiny.

Talking sense on translation

And while I'm ranting and raving, three cheers to Kirkless Council Tory leader Robert Light – he's a politician who's seen the light!

He's planning to axe the on-demand translation service for people who do not speak English, which costs hard-pressed Kirkless council taxpayers a whopping £200,000 a year. Yes, readers, almost a quarter of a million pounds of your money if you live in Kirklees.

Light told our Dewsbury reporter Neil Hudson it was the worst kind of political correctness that someone can just turn up and have someone who speaks their language waiting for them. Hear hear! Someone should tell that to the French.

Oh, and Coun Light also has in his sights the amount of multi-lingual signs on his patch. I hope he gets rid of them completely.

Well, it would be in line with present Government thinking on "Britishness" so willno complaints will come from them then? Don't bet on it when elections are looming.
