Default In-car road pricing black box could cost each motorist £600

Today's Telegraph reports that:

Motorists face a potential bill of more than £600 to fit a black box needed to make a full pay-as-you-drive road pricing system work, Whitehall documents have revealed.

A blueprint drawn up by the Department for Transport showed it could cost £62 billion to set up and £8.6 billion a year to run.

Every motorist could end up paying nearly £300 just to cover the expense of collecting the charge, according to the department's feasibility study.

I will go to court if necessary and claim it is against my human rights, to be tracked and traced by a government that I don't trust.

I told ya they're letting the petition run because they'd already sussed that it's not feasible. Now they can say they're backing out because they listen to the people, rather than the real reason.

If that £8.6 bn is a net cost (i.e. taking account of the money collected in the road charging scheme) it surely begs the question why don't they spend that money either improving the roads or improving public transport?

I'm totally against any road charging scheme.
Not for the reasons given by others - I couldn't give a toss who knows where I am in my car. With the number of surveillance cameras that abound now they probably already do in any case, and it hasn't made me paranoid nor scarred me for life.

No, my objection is much simpler. We are ALREADY being taxed out the ass for road use. It's called fuel duty. The more you use the road, the more you pay. To be asked to pay on top of that for basically the same thing would be totally iniquitous.
