Default Jobless 'must learn English'

http://www.epolitix.com/EN/News/2007...33280849e2.htm

Quote:
From April, some 40,000 jobless people who say not speaking English is a barrier to finding work could face sanctions.

Murphy was expected to tell a Work Foundation seminar in London that unemployment rates among ethnic minorities are unacceptable, and that £4.5m is being spent on translators in job centres that could be better spent on language teaching.
I can't even be bothered to comment anymore.

Destroyed by design.

I would imagine this is going to be against some EU equality directive too.

Why stop at teaching non-nationals English. We could do with teaching half the language to half the English too!

I agree. Sometimes I think the standards are appaling.
But that's a different issue from being able to communicate at all in the language.

As a tax payer, it doesn't sit at all well with me that I have to pay for translators to assist those who can't communicate in English to get unemployment benefit that I also pay for. People who seem to have little prospect being anything other than a continuous haemorrhage.

Hear, hear. I sometimes find it very difficult to understand people who are supposed to be speaking English. Their grammar is disgraceful.

It is no wonder children today cannot speak the language properly when the presenters on some of the BBC programmes speak so badly. Their roll models seem to be badly educated footballers, pop stars and other so called "celebs".

I agree though. English language teaching in this country is a farce.
