Police blasted on 'chase' policy

Had the police gone in pursuit and the thieves come to serious grief, I have no doubt that a witch hunt would have ensued.
Strikes me as a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation.

*Lewis Carroll might not have been best pleased with that comment.
