Default Pedometers for 'deprived' pupils

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/6290467.stm

Quote:
Children who attend primary schools in deprived areas of England are to be given pedometers in an attempt to encourage them to be more active.
The £494,000 scheme will see 45,000 pedometers, which measure the number of steps taken, handed out in 250 schools.

Pupils will chart their progress by logging on to a website that sets targets for their number of steps.

The scheme follows a pilot in 50 schools which showed increases in children's activity levels.
Nanny state again. Parents, you are no longer in control. Give us your money and we shall now be looking after your kids.

How great.

PROTIP; You can't encourage children by giving them pedometers.

I give it a day, before the kids get bored, lose it, break it etc.

Give the kids varied activities and facilities to play/do sport etc.

This **** is a total waste of cash. I bet a Labour donar owns the company that makes them.

Perhaps if our authorities stopped stuffing turkey twizzlers down the throats of children and selling off our school playing fields our nation's childen wouldn't be in such a dire way.

That £494,000 could buy massive amounts of fruit, vegetables and decent meat and bread.

It's just under £11 per pupil targeted - so not really massive amounts per child.
We quite often buy our fruit and vegetables at Hemel Hempstead market (giving it a plug). The quality is excellent and prices are about half those charged in supermarkets. About £11 would buy Mrs B and I enough for a week or so.
Sure, £494,000 is a lot of money - I'm just trying to get it into the perspective of the issue being addressed.

That's too much for a pedometer.

Possibly so.
But my point was about how much fruit and vegetables £11 would buy in response to the post made by 22ANDUK.

Loads if you have 11 quids worth of seeds etc for kids to grow their own as part of a school project, burning off a load of lard as the prep the ground and look after them.
