Default Congestion charge plan for city

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/m...er/6293481.stm

Quote:
Congestion charges are proposed on main routes into Manchester city centre.
Council leaders from the 10 Greater Manchester authorities are meeting to discuss plans to charge motorists on busy roads into the city by 2012.

The system would target the 15 roads with the greatest congestion but would cost less than the £8 London charge.
It'll role out across Britain sooner or later. Only the super rich will be able to drive eventually. Just like the old days.

It amuses me because the next thing you will hear are the City Council wondering why the City centre is dying Also the bien pensants will be complaining yet again about the growth of out of city shopping centres.
We used to go regularly to London for a weekend arriving Friday afternon going home mid Monday morning. Since the charge was introduced we have never been again

Ah!

What a marvellous scheme!

A road tax to let people go on the road!

A congestion tax to let people go on the road!

Spiffy idea.

Shrewsbury will be next. They have granted funding for road improvements in the area but as a condition conjestion charges will be introduced.

How about a stealth health tax.

Have a look at this petition.

Petition to: ensure patients/visitors of Manchester Royal Infirmary receive a full refund of the Manchester Congestion Charge!.

We must all accept changes in the way that we live in a changing world.

Our major cities were never designed to cater for the motor car, and now the numbers of cars in use mean that the amount of road area being used per capita is unacceptable.

Park and ride schemes are a good part way solution, and an entry fee for people who need to get into areas that are most affected by traffic encourages the use of park and ride.

So long as those who must use a motor vehicle such as the disabled, along with taxi’s, and other form essential traffic are exempt then personally I think an entry fee is a very good thing to have in place.

I've got an entry fee for the UK road network stuck to the nearside of my windscreen.

Fact of the matter is, if public transport wasn't so **** then more people would take it.
I remember in my younger days you could catch a bus into Norwich to go to the pub and then catch a return bus at 11:10pm, 12:10am, 1:10am and 2:20am or there abouts.
The buses where always full. Some excuse about drunken people and the whole thing was cut out. London, Brighton etc. seem to do fine with a late night bus service.
They then started cutting chunks out of the bus route. Needless to say more people drive now, and the park and ride does not run that late.
I'm sure it's really helped cut down on drink drivers... not!

I hate using public transport in this country, so I don't. When my wife drags me to Hamburg to visit her Aunt the trains and buses are a dream. If I lived there I wouldn't bother with a car. The only way is more carrot not stick. Unfortunately we don't seem to be able to run things like public transport in this country!
