Default Race probe into hostel Brits ban

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_east/6280527.stm

Quote:
A hostel in Cardiff which bans British people from staying there is being investigated under race laws.
Cardiff Backpackers, in the Riverside area of the city, advertises rooms on its website as available to "foreign passport holders only".

Hostel owner Sion Llewelyn did not want to comment but told the South Wales Echo that the rule was because he did not want unruly British guests spoiling the experience of foreign visitors.

So many issues at play here.

Are Brits more rowdy than the norm? In general maybe, but replace the word British with black and you know there would have been total hell to pay.

Should he be forced to treat people on an individual basis, instead of by group?

Would a British person want to stay where they are not welcome?

Should a small hotel owner be told who he is allowed to have in his private establishment?

How do you enforce it anyway, if he then just turns Brits away using his right to discretion (ala night clubs).

Why has he painted the place in UKIP colours?

Can a British person be racist towards British people? (I guess so).

All these rules just seem to make a big mess in my opinion.

No. His house, his rules. Everything else is a secondary consideration at best.

Default Foreign Passport holders at Cardiff hostel

Well he won't be short of custom at his hostel - there are enough foreign passport holders over here.

I am a great believer in you can turn away who you like if you own the establishment. Why should any person by law be forced to accept anybody onto their premises if there are certain types they can't stand. Personally I can't stand rowdy ignorant people of any colour or Nationality!

Addressing just a few of the points raised:

Yes, I suppose so too. But not specifically because they are British. Being British describes nationality, not race.

Provided he operates within the laws, I agree. There is a bit of a parallel with the guest-house owner in Cumbria? who didn't want to allow homosexual couples to stay in his premises.

More than enough. And I'd more concerned about those who are here without proper documentation - illegal immigrants.

I don't know what this has to do with race. Both Brits and foreigners come from all races. My wife is foreign and white. Frank Bruno is British and black.

It's easy: his house, his rules - however he must submit details of guests to the local police station, as is done on the continent and in the US, and any persons turned down for asylum or for work permits should theoretically be detected.

Surely more relevant to say, replace the word 'British' with 'Polish', would there have been hell to pay?

Yes fair enough, I was just pointing out that some groups seem to create more reaction than others, when they are discriminated against.

If his premises are licensed he can turn anyone
away and not give a reason and should be aware
of this, hence no official hostel policy reqd.
If not, as MKPD said , too many issues.

But there's a problem allowing it there.

What about a major chain, such as ASDA or Tesco, denying certain peoples access. Their "house", their rules.

Which could, theoretically, screw people over due to something that's not within their control.
