mark starr is just starting out
Default courtesy suffers another blow

William Hill , the bookmakers, have been in the habit of giving free coffee to their punters but have now stopped because they have been advised that they are liable to prosecution under health and safety laws if anything went wrong.

My company have done the same sort of thing.

We are a 24/7 support group and used to have a kitchen. It was a bit manky, but it had a microwave, fridge, kettle etc. It was o.k.

Now, the company have said that health and safety means they can't let us have this anymore. Rather they could, but all the checks they would have to do on a regular basis, would make it too expensive. So now we have to buy from vending machines, or leave the building in the wee hours of the night to find somewhere to eat.

I've said my company are a microcosm of the way the world is going and it is.

They have made the whole business cashless, so that we have to put money on our ID cards (yes you heard right, no biometrics or RFID yet though), so that we can't buy things unless we use these cards. Therefore if your card stops working (as they do frequently), you can't buy anything (at night especially) anyway.

Needless to say I refuse to use this **** and make my own provisions. They are getting worried now that a lot of people are doing the same, so do they scrap the whole sorry scheme? Do they hell. They are now trying to bribe people to use them, but saying they can have money transfered to this card from your pre tax salary, therefore saving a bit of tax. The fact you have to spend the money on goods that are up to 50p dearer than the shops, for a saving of pennies in tax doesn't seem to matter.

When you let the machines and systems take over, this is what happens.

Surely such a hazardous profession shouldn't be allowed? Think of the papercuts!
