Stewardess banned from carrying Bible

By David Millward, Transport Correspondent
Last Updated: 1:57am GMT 20/12/2006

A second airline is embroiled in a religious row after a stewardess decided to take bmi to an employment tribunal because it refused to allow her to carry a Bible on flights to Saudi Arabia.

The stewardess, who has not been named, claims that she has been subject to discrimination because of her faith.

She is understood to have deep religious convictions and carries a Bible with her at all times.

But bmi, which is the only British scheduled carrier to fly to the country after British Airways pulled out of the route, insisted that it was only following Foreign Office advice.

Default Thank you

Thanks for posting that article G. Hall. I was looking for it. A similar report appeared on either Ceefax or Teletext the other day, but they took it off before I even had time to find pen and paper to make notes :x  .

There's the key word, advice, not rules or law. I can't see any problem here. If she gets caught with it in Saudi Arabia, that's her own problem, but there shouldn't be any barriers to her taking one on the plane.

Default Bible ban

The article in the first posting to this thread mentions 'BMI' whatever that is. Presumably this means an airline I know as British Midland who I have used before with satisfaction.

British Airways are on my 'airlines to boycott' list following their disgraceful treatment of their loyal and hardworking employee Miss Eweila who only wanted to wear a tiny crucifix (the size of a five pence piece) on her necklace but was banned from doing so and has been off work since.

If I find that 'BMI' are behind a bible ban - they will go on that list, too.

This topic has been done to death before.
BA rules proscribe ALL necklaces.

It's not the fact it's a necklace, it's the fact it's a religious symbol. BA are effectively discriminating against Christians - just because a symbol of Christian faith isn't an item of clothing, but can be an item of jewelry.

I agree - it is anti-Christian discrimination. And no person of a non-Christian religion has complained. The instigators of the ban are politically correct British Airways managers/executives. If I had my way, I would sack them for what they have done. Those responsible for the crucifix ban have not apologised and have - through their ridiculous ban - brought British Airways tens of millions of Pounds worth of bad publicity worldwide.

Default Making mistake of believing BA ban is about necklaces

British Airways (BA) says their rule is about necklaces - but its real target is the Crucifix on the necklace.

Read between the lines.

You are listening to what BA says (mistake) and actually believing it (another mistake).

As I've written before, the attitude of BA on this has resulted in it obtaining a reputation for being anti-Christian around the world. This is going to cost in money in terms of lost bookings.

Time for the shareholders of BA to look into this irresponsible decision to stop BA staff member Mrs. Eweida from wearing her tiny Crucifix (no larger than a five pence piece).

What a foolish thing BA have done. Upset tens of millions of Christians worldwide by banning something the size of a five pence piece.
