Mike Newell, Manager of Luton Football Club, is under fire for allegedly saying that women should not act as linesmen at football games. After coming under great pressure, Mr. Newell has apologised.
From BBC Ceefax reported at 2.47 am on 14.11.2006 (analogue page 306): Luton’s Board of Directors will meet manager Mike Newell to discuss the comments he made about lineswoman Amy Rayner after Saturday’s defeat by Queen’s Park Rangers. The board met on Monday and said in a statement “The club disassociates itself with the manager’s comments which have no place in the game. The board will meet with the manager as a matter of urgency.” Newell has apologised for his comment about Rayner, saying “My comments are ill-timed and out of order.” * ITV 1 Teletext reported at 2.52 am on 14.11.2006 (analogue page 403) that Mike Newell was “clinging to his job” and that the board of Luton Football Club decided not to take action against him until they have spoken to the former Blackburn football star. The Luton Football Club issued a statement saying “Luton (FC) disassociates itself totally from the sexist comments made by him. The board will meet the manager as a matter of urgency.” Mr. Newell is reported to have said of assistant referee Amy Rayner “her appearance (participation) is tokenism for the politically correct idiots.” The comment was allegedly made after Luton Football Club lost to Queen’s Park Rangers 3-2. Sky Television Sport said that Mr. Newell had told them “I want to apologise publicly to Amy Rayner and to anyone else I have offended. The comments I made were ill-timed and out order.” |

What was his reasons for women not running the line? I can't think why they would be incapable.

If the woman can meet the same physical demands as the men then she can run the line. Since on your own admission you don't follow soccer it is possible that you are not aware of the macho nature of the game (compared to Rugby Union they're all wusses). A referee should be able to run about 10 miles in 90 minutes. It is not constant plodding, but lots of short, sharp bursts of energy. Most men are not fit enough to be referees. Women are on average physically weaker, despite what the PC brigade will have you believe. There will be very few women linesmen.
The problem will be a female referee/linesman standing in the middle of a group of aggressive, and not always very bright, young men in the middle of their tantrums. A female voice cuts no mustard, especially with the Muslim and other macchismo players who will not accept a red card from a woman (soccer is an international sport and most English top flight teams have several foreigners). It is noticeable that the PC brigade have not yet called for mixed sports - men and women competing together as equals. In all athletic disciplines this would spell the virtual end of female participation on a worldwide basis. You only have to look at the world records to see the difference between the speeds run by women, the heights jumped, the weights lifted and the distances thrown etc Mixed soccer and Rugby would be the same. There is no demand for women to play professional soccer in men's teams; everybody knows that all but a handful wouldn't be able to cope. The aggressive and competitive nature of men in sports is well known (I know, if you're PC you disagree completely and would have all the men sent off the moment they made the girlies cry). You can't change nature. Men are different physically and emotionally to women. That is an indisputable fact. Men and women should not compete against each other in the bulk of sports. I fully understand Mr Newell's comments; his mistake is not realising how many PC people there are out there. If Alec Ferguson, or any of the other New Labour saints, had uttered the words it would have been okay. In the real world some places should be off limits to men and some should be off limits to women and the PC brigade should sod off! |

I know some pretty fierce women, especially ones who play rugby and football.
If they are good enough, then they should be allowed. Yep, maybe there will be a lot less women with the right attributes, but there are some. They should not be barred. I also think if the woman feels she can take the banter from young men, then they are more likely to calm them, than wind them up. If you are good enough, you are in as far as I'm concerned. What would be PC, is forcing quotas of women in, even if they couldn't do the job.

From ITV 1 Teletext, analogue page 402 at 6.45 pm on 16.11.2006 (brief extract):
Luton Manager Mike Newell has been “severely reprimanded” after saying that women referees and assistants are tokenism for the politically-correct idiots.” * ITV 1 Teletext claimed that Mr. Newell has apologised but refused to withdraw his alleged comments. |
