You can stop that right now.
It was a toss up between putting 'vegetarian' or 'John Carter type'.
It's now clear that a lot of you gentlemen here don't have the slightest clue as to what I'm about. So I'll take my leave and let you get on with it.

Good luck with the fight against the EU, chaps. Try and remember that it's probably better to fight it whilst not making use of its "freedom of movement" laws.

I hope you're kidding. I certainly was. No offence intended, honestly.

Why are you taking the whole report at literal face value except the last quote?
Because I accept that they don't see there is a problem Now they have investigated it, probably sampled a few bags of chips and terrorised the owner a bit. They have had their power trip and probably feel smug that they have gone and put the wind up one of the plebs on the basis of a pitiful complaint, that should have been filed straight in the bin.

I don't buy this everything has to be investigated line. All complaints should have an initial screening process to confirm it is a valid complaint. Timewasters should be told in no uncertain terms to do one.

Hmm. But how does the process of determining a valid complaint not count as investigating a complaint? Surely they would come in for more criticism for saying 'nah, we bin any complaint if we don't rate it'?

I work in a support roll fixing mainframe computers.

If a customer phones through a call, saying his coffee machine isn't working, I don't send and engineer around to investigate. I politely tell the customer to do one, it isn't a mainframe and is not a problem for us to look into.

There are some complaints that don't warrant further investigation. Unless there is some information that wasn't reported here, such as the chip shop had big fans power wafting the smell directly into the house over the road, then I suggest this is one of them.

The police pretty much do the same. If you phone 999 and ask someone to help find your cat, they will tell you to do one.

The council have to start using some common sense. They don't have to investigate every problem, unless their is a good valid complaint up front.

A West Yorkshire chip shop owner is being investigated after a complaint that his shop smells of fish and chips.
Owner of New Scarborough Fisheries in Wakefield, Steve Morton, was asked to check the odour extraction system was working properly after the complaint.

A spokeswoman for Wakefield Council said the authority was obliged to investigate the matter.
They will have to ban food preparation, so the people are no longer offended.

It probably gives you cancer too.

Will somebody think of the children!
I like chips and I like the smell of chips. I would not object if a fish and chip shop opened next door. In fact, I would use it regularly.

I do sometimes wonder if some of these complaints against people are being lodged with local authorities because, perhaps (in some cases), the complainant just doesn't like the shop owner.

I mean, if people were throwing their fish and chip papers in someone's garden - there are grounds of complaint. But even that could be solved by the resident simply having a quiet word with the shop owner about him/her asking his/her customers to dispose of wrappings carefully.

To complain about the smell of fish and chips is something I can't see any English/British person doing.

I think that fish and chip shops have long been regarded as a special class for planning purposes (well before the EU started to take over our planning).

The people who complain about the smell from a chippy need someone to move next door and play loud music all night long. That'll give them something real to moan about.

When I walk past a fish and chip shop that's open, the smell of the food makes it very difficult for me not to go in and buy some   .

But I've got no objection to the closure of certain foreign 'burger' bars and takeaways. Many of them are overpriced and don't fit in.

Fish and chip shops and Indian restaurants win my approval 8) .
