Good luck with the fight against the EU, chaps. Try and remember that it's probably better to fight it whilst not making use of its "freedom of movement" laws. |

I don't buy this everything has to be investigated line. All complaints should have an initial screening process to confirm it is a valid complaint. Timewasters should be told in no uncertain terms to do one.

I work in a support roll fixing mainframe computers.
If a customer phones through a call, saying his coffee machine isn't working, I don't send and engineer around to investigate. I politely tell the customer to do one, it isn't a mainframe and is not a problem for us to look into. There are some complaints that don't warrant further investigation. Unless there is some information that wasn't reported here, such as the chip shop had big fans power wafting the smell directly into the house over the road, then I suggest this is one of them. The police pretty much do the same. If you phone 999 and ask someone to help find your cat, they will tell you to do one. The council have to start using some common sense. They don't have to investigate every problem, unless their is a good valid complaint up front.

I do sometimes wonder if some of these complaints against people are being lodged with local authorities because, perhaps (in some cases), the complainant just doesn't like the shop owner. I mean, if people were throwing their fish and chip papers in someone's garden - there are grounds of complaint. But even that could be solved by the resident simply having a quiet word with the shop owner about him/her asking his/her customers to dispose of wrappings carefully. To complain about the smell of fish and chips is something I can't see any English/British person doing. |

When I walk past a fish and chip shop that's open, the smell of the food makes it very difficult for me not to go in and buy some   .But I've got no objection to the closure of certain foreign 'burger' bars and takeaways. Many of them are overpriced and don't fit in. Fish and chip shops and Indian restaurants win my approval 8) . |
