Just seen on the BBC News. Sikhs hold a funeral pyre. The widow of the drowned man wanted him cremated as he would have been in India. Don't know where it was, but it looked as if it was held in a field.

They wouldn't let her ship him back to India.
I have some sympathy for them.

The problem is that they might have broken our laws. It is a difficult situation since the body could not be returned. It is these sort of relatively minor, but important for individuals, problems that we have MPs and diplomatic staff and I am surprised that no compromise could have been reached. The family probably went through the wrong channels, or, sadly, couldn't afford the necessary bribe to oil the wheels in India.

Probably just testing British public reaction to doing this in the Country.
Could be just the thin end of the wedge. If they are allowed to polute the air like this, imagine what it will be like once they have the all clear. BBQ and burnings in the back yards, gardens, alotments, rugby, soccer, cricket pitches, someone will eventually want to hold one in the middle of a roundabout or public park area. Am I going completely mad? Is this stuff laughable or frightening to the point of becoming an horrific spectacle for kids to whitness because they are inquisitive little angels usually. What have these people been doing with all their dead bodies in the past? (Dont mention curries.) |

I am a bit confused whether the deceased person was a Sikh or a Hindu at this stage, but either way I would have some sympathy with the relatives and those who organized the cremation [ in that they were only trying to show respect to a deceased person of their faith ] as I believe people should have the fullest possible freedom as long as it does not violate the rights of others.

The Anglo-Asian Friendship Society should be aware that there are agencies in this country and in India who will arrange for the remains of Hindus, Sikhs etc. to be returned to India for cremation and the scattering of ashes at holy sites. For an organisation of this type not to know this is unbelievable. I can only imagine that they are aware of these services, but are deliberately trying the law of this country. In the present climate of authority bowing to the whims of minority ethnic and religious groups this is hardly surprising. The next thing we will see is the barbaric practice of sati (practice of a widow immolating herself on her husband's funeral pyre).
