Default 'Gay Claim Is Rubbish'

http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0...527261,00.html

Quote:
The BBC has been criticised for failing to reprimand motormouth DJ Chris Moyles for using the word "gay" to mean "rubbish".

Moyles, who presents the Radio 1 flagship Breakfast Show, dismissed a ring tone by saying "I don't want that one, it's gay".

Stonewall, the lesbian and gay rights group, complained to the BBC that equating "gay" and "rubbish" was highly offensive.

But the BBC Governors Programme Complaints Committee said language was constantly evolving and young people did use the two words in the context Moyles had.

The word "gay" in addition to being used to mean "homosexual" or "carefree", is often now used to mean "lame" or "rubbish", it said.

Andy Forrest, Stonewall communications officer, said: "Our view would be that the majority of gay people do find the use of gay as a derogatory term very offensive.

"We feel that this should be the BBC's main consideration, not whether that is the way it is being used, so it is good, but the fact that a section of society are finding it offensive and therefore it should not be used."

The BBC added it would be "advisable" to think more carefully about using the word "gay" in its derogatory sense in the future.
All I can say is how gay.

I wonder how many Gays (sorry homosexuals) were actually offended by his remarks!

No matter what the issue, there is always somebody there to defend others because they feel they ought, not because they need to. Just another example of political correctness gone mad.

Stonewall are gay anyway.

I never knew they now viewed themselves as some sort of 'language police'.

They have nothing to do anymore now gays have equal status.

So gay.

Well, it is highly hypocritical of the homosexual and lesbian community because they hi-jacked the word Gay in the first place. It means happy, joyful, et cetera.

The BBC is correct, Language is constantly evolving. I think a lot of people are aware of this newer usage. However, it's just a shame that the word has been hi-jacked twice and now means something completely different from the original

Quite amusingly not only is the word "gay" used to describe something as rubbish but quite often the word "homosexual" is used in the same way. A young man I work with often describes things (normally a task which he doesn't want to do) as "full blown homosexual".

Default its a fun word, not offensive

'gay' is often used in language by young people. its just another slang word. it doesnt mean any harm and is not offensive. any 'homosexuals and gays' who are offended by this use of the word should 'grow up' or if they really dont like it, become straight, and then they wont be offended. gay is not offensive and is just a way of saying 'rubbish' and 'not very good'. its just a bit of fun.
