Default Scotland to ban smoking in cars?

I'm hearing off the grapevine that Scotland is considering a ban on smoking in private cars. Anyone have any more on this?

Default Smoking in cars

John, I've never heard this before. But it doesn't surprise me.

If you let these 'overpaid do-gooders' get away with banning one thing - they'll just move on and start on something else.

There's also the issue of the Scottish Parliament that comes in here. Banning smoking in cars? If it turns out to be correct that the Scottish Parliament is considering such a thing then the message it will send out to the public in Scotland is that it is a bossy, interfering talking shop which many people (in Scotland) could perhaps do without.

Now smoking is set to be listed alongside eating, drinking and reading maps as potentially lethal distractions in next year's version of the Highway Code. Drivers who smoke will face on-the-spot fines of £60, similar to those caught using a mobile phone.
or drinking a macdonalds shake whilst on the move?

It's smoking at petrol satations they should get concerned about.

It's a pity they don't ban Scottish politicians from leaving Scotland!

I don't smoke, but I can imagine getting out a cigarette, a lighter, and connecting the two while driving could be at least as much of a distraction as taking one hand off the steering wheel to hit a short dial key on a phone.

well, of course that really depends how good you are at smoking. Maybe it should be incoprotated into part of the test? I think if I had been offered the chance to have a relaxing ciggie in my test I may have passed even better than I did first time....

Narh. It's the actual talking part of mobile calls which is the distracting bit.

Lighting a smoke at anything under 90 is no big deal - it's about a half-second eyes-off-road job, if that. Probably takes the average driver/smoker longer to look at their speedo than it does to light up.

Fairy nuff.
But to answer a phone call, I don't need to my eyes off the road at all. In fact I need take no action at all. At the end of the call, I can just hit a button on the steering wheel. No different to turning the radio up or down.
Never any need to look anywhere other than the road ahead.

And talking to a caller is not a lot different to talking to a passenger. Maybe that should be banned too ?
