Another example of political correctness gone mad:
From the Times 24.3.2006 (abridged): Stallholders at the Market Hall in Doncaster (Yorkshire) have been sent a letter from a council official telling them that it had received complaints about shouting and that there shouting may be in breach of the Disability Discrimination Act. Shouting out details of products and price cuts is a normal part of market trading – but Doncaster Council told the stallholders “the noise could pose problems for shoppers with hearing aids in a confined space (the market hall). The constant shouting does not add to the colour and ambience but has a reverse effect.” David Place, Chairman of Doncaster Market Traders’ Federation told the Times “It’s got a little out of hand. You can’t speak to the customers because of the shouting.” “Shouting is technically not allowed (on the market at Doncaster) by by laws” said Mark Hodson, Doncaster Council’s Strategic Director. Pat Queen, a butcher who was one of those blamed for shouting, commented “the people complaining sell the most expensive meats and we do cut price meats. The customers want to know about bargains. Shouting is all about getting people away from the supermarkets.” Doncaster market is the largest traditional market in the north of England and received its Charter from Richard the Lionheart. There are 570 stalls with 63 of them in the market hall. |

I wonder if they will bring that in at football matches and stock exchanges one day.
It's a brave new world, *When I say brave, I mean dire*
