Call For Metric Road Sign Switch

Kilometre, millimetre and litre are dirty words as far as I'm concerned. I checked with an Indian-born colleague of mine yesterday and was pleased when it was confirmed that India - a huge nation of growing importance - drives on the same side of the road as us.

The best ally the pro-Imperial measurements people (like me) have on this is the example of the USA. When the miniscule pro-Metric lobby here in the UK say Imperial is old-fashioned - we just have to reply with one word: America

. The most modern, powerful and technically advanced nation on the planet.

So, we have the USA and India - two of the most important nations in the world with very big populations - on the same side as us on using Imperial measurements.

The pro-Metric lobby - by no coincidence - are ALL europhiles: Kinnock and the unpleasant EU-fanatic 'Lord' Howe just two examples. I've forgotten the names of the other two members of the pro-Metric Association but they won't be members of UKIP or the English Democrats, that's for sure.

By the way, I was told by an expert that Fahrenheit is a more accurate system than Celcius/Centigrade or whatever they call it :shock: .

That is because they say it is too expensive but watch them as it is our money that they will do this with. Perhaps they will eventually get us driving in kilometres on the wrong side of the road but they will be having to look under their cars every time they use them... :shock:

Two different issues there, Britannist.
USA uses (a version of) Imperial and drives on the right. UK uses Imperial and drives on the left. Australia uses metric and drives on the left. Continental Europe uses metric and drives on the right. Put otherwise, all possible combinations exist.

I am not opposed to metric for uses where it has benefits. Changing our road signs isn't one of them.

I will always drive on the left anyway as thats what I have been doing for the last 40 years!, do whatever you like but I will still continue to drive on the left

I shall also read any speed limit sign as MPH even if they are metricated, ie see a 60 limit and its 60 MPH to me, end of

Is the rumouir true that with his demand for metric only Kinnock is also advocating that the Welsh language be abolished and the official EU language be only English ?

"Abolishing" the Welsh (or any other) language would be against EU policy.

I think he is trying to show the double standards of wanting one thing harmonised, but not the other.
