Murdered girl's memorial rejected
By A Correspondent
A memorial to a murdered ten-year-old schoolgirl has been banned by council officials who fear that it might offend the family of her killer.
Mary and Graham Storrie wanted to erect a bench at a play spot favoured by their daughter, Rosie May, who was murdered at a Christmas party in 2003 by Paul Smith, 18, a family friend.
However, councillors in Bottesford, Leicestershire, rejected the proposal, arguing that Smith’s grandparents, who live in the village, may be offended.
Mrs Storrie, 44, who raised the cost of the memorial herself, said yesterday: “This is about having something in her memory, something for the children of the village.”
Bottesford Parish Council defended its decision. David Wright, the chairman, said: “A lot of parish council members have lived in the village a long time and know both families, so we have to consider everyone’s feelings.”
Nicola Robinson, a spokeswoman for the Rosie May appeal, said: “We were shocked at the council’s decision and at their attitude and lack of compassion.”
