Now, now, let's not get nasty boys and girls.
As to the topic, I agree to the principle of not changing things just because some newcomer doesn't understand the local history, and/or to conform to PC sensibilities. But, in this case, a walk has been re-named from its original name to the name of one of the worst European dictators and mass murderers ever known - and this was done before it was known how bad he was. To revert to the original name, in this case, is no bad thing. If people want to maintain the Hitler name as a local nick name, then fine, but official sign posts are a different matter. That's all I'm saying. |

I just wonder how many sons and daughters of the location in question died, served or were maimed in WW2. If they or their relatives didn't think it offensive then, what right have we to think it offensive now?

Fair enough, but if they, being the locals, want to maintain signposts which are openly offensive to certain people, then they have to accept a good deal of criticism. At what point do the 'newcomers' become 'locals' and, therefore, become legitimate critics of the name according to members of this forum? Can you give me a specific time frame?

Should we ban Latin because it comes from the Romans, who went round conquering foreign, and butchering and abusing domestic populations? Should we rename all of the towns and areas where their names are derived from their roman ones? I didn't think so...

Right Ok Modern Tory, you see no distinction between the architect of the Holocaust and the starter of the most destructive war to ever hit Europe, who lived within the living memory of some people and was responsible for the death of people's relatives only one or two generations removed, and a 2000 year old civilisation that is now extinct and its worst excesses no longer relate to anyone personally.
How bad does it have to be before you acknowledge change is a reasonable action? Gas Chamber Way? How about if people started naming roads and paths after Peter Sutcliffe or Myra Hindly? Would it be PC to change those back too? Notice - change them back, this isn't the original name of this path. |

Not great examples. According to Multimap there are 9 'Sutcliffe Roads' and 5 'Hindley Streets', including one in Manchester. I didn't try all the various combinations of road, way, close, avenue, street etc.
Amusingly, there is an Adolf street in Catford. One has to wonder if that's just british humour at work. |
