Default Cannot speak Polish....therefore barred from building site

I went to my local JobCentre yesterday and was told that I couldn't apply for a job as a general labourer at a building site in the area because I couldn't speak Polish.
Any comments on the legalities of it all would be welcome. THANKS.

Mad, but quite within their rights.

I could, for example, make speaking English a requirement for the Photographers I work with.

This is England we are talking about here, not friggin Poland. Turning people away because they only speak their native tounge, in their own country is out of order and no one can convince me otherwise! Unless it was a job that truly requires another language, such as a translator. If people want to come and work here, they should speak English, just as I would expect English people to adhere to other countries language requirements.

If the Building sites Management are POLISH, and can only communicate in that language, and all the Risk assessments method statements, Which they are legalley meant to have, are in order if they employ more than five people, If the management are not POLISH, AND THEY CAN NOT COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR WORKFORCE, THEY ARE BREAKING STATUTE LAW, 1974 HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK ACT, Play them at their own game, Get in touch with the Health and Safety executive, ask their advice, also Inform the jobcentre if they have checked with the H&S EXECUTIVE, As it seems Odd That nobody who does not speek polish is allowed to work on the Building site, it is descrimination, also TAKE Advice ring a union or visit their web site www.ucatt.org and see what they think about this Incident! Do not Roll over and let them take your work from you! everyone deservs to be able to make a living, they might be payeing the polish workers less, and are useing language as an EXCUSE?

I have clicked on the sites shown above but can't find the job referred to (or any jobs for that matter!). Can anyone help?

(Who designs these idiotic web sites - or don't they care - is it just about claiming "e-government"?)

Later: OK - found it now but what a user-hostile site,

For safety reasons, you must have knowledge of the Polish language for on site communication. Duties will be labouring for a gang of brick layer, keeping the site tidy, loading and unloading and all other related duties.

No, the link is dynamic and keeps changing - bloody silly idea!

Anyway, as stated above, select construction and carry on through the menu.
