Default Regional Assemblies and ID cards?

I saw on BBC Parliament that the Regional assembly quangos could be involved in the use of ID cards for the provision of services. Was I right? If so, what business is it of these bureaucratic non-democratic organisations which nobody wants even if they know about them?

The non-elected are more likely to be compliant than the elected. In Oxfordshire there have already been 3 successful anti-ID cards motions passed by Councils. Oxford City, Oxfordshire County and, today, West Oxfordshire District Council have all passed anti-ID card motions.

It is imperative that as many people as possible get involved in their local branches of No2ID (the list is available on www.no2id.net). The branches are cross party and are a great way to get involved with local politicians of all hues and none. I have been open about UKIP membership, but careful to be discreet and friendly when mixing with people from the far-left rightwards. I have made a lot of new friends and we held a meeting last week where 2 local MPs spoke (one Blue, one Orange) whilst we had an IT database specialist to speak who, whilst keeping her politics quiet, happened to be UKIP. I see UKIP MEPs have spoken elsewhere in the country.

This is not an opportunity to sell UKIP policies per se, but it is an opportunity to show that we are normal concerned people who can co-operate with our opponents on matters of principal. Many activists of other parties are elected representatives and, on the off chance that any forum member takes a local council seat, it will be nice to turn up to a council meeting and be welcomed as an old friend by opposing councillors who you might just have to work with for several years.

I agree, but isn't a sad reflection on our government that a compliant quango is the way to push through laws and regulations. New Labour and the EU Commission have a lot in common. No wonder Mandelson is so at home!

TVM.

Apparently Vale of White Horse DC are now going to vote on a motion to oppose ID cards.

Everybody in the SE should try to get motions before their councils by pushing No2ID. In most area there are LibDems and Tories coming on side all of the time. If all the councils in the SE vote against co-operating it will be difficult for SEERA to be alone in going with the government.
