Whilst the United People's Party is a more liberal party than most others on the nationalist spectrum, they do have a habit of putting out some rather extremist sounding slogans. The two examples I'm thinking of are "One nation, one people, one party", which sounds rather too Nazi, and a recent facebook post which read "Unity is strength". Aside from being rather 1984-ish, it's also rather similar to the motto of the bad guys from V for Vendetta. Now this isn't a huge issue, but for a party facing accusations of dictatorship, due to a lack of internal democracy, these are probably associations you don't need.
Any thoughts?
“One Nation, One People, One Party”:
This is the official slogan of the United People’s Party.
“One Nation” relates to Britain.
“One People” relates to the British people.
“One Party” relates to the United People’s Party.
The meaning of the slogan is simple - we want unity in this country, moving forward together in order to achieve what we feel are the extremely desirable goals which are outlined in the Party’s 8 Point Plan.
I can understand why some people may link it to Nazism but we really don’t feel the need to abandon a very appropriate slogan just because a dissolved/outlawed party in another country used a similar sounding slogan well over half a century ago which, incidentally, relate to completely differing goals.
Quite frankly, if this the only thing that people can use to define the Party as “Nazi”, we can be safe in the knowledge that they are struggling to find something that would actually link us to such a vile ideology - mainly because the Party’s ideals stand in almost complete contrast to Nazism.
“Unity is strength”:
For clarity, this was a facebook status update, nothing that is, or will be, publicised elsewhere, such as on the Party’s election material or website. I would therefore not really consider it as a Party slogan, though you can define it as such if you wish.
More to the point, I really don’t think it is a particularly “extremist sounding” phrase. It is, however, undoubtedly a phrase that has been seen 1000 times before for religious, historical or political purposes.
I think the phrase is somewhat self-explanatory, we are stronger when we stand together - something that is central to the ideals of the United People’s Party.
That's true. I never I said I disagreed with them, merely that those were the associations I got from them. Other than that I find very little to criticise the UPP on.
I'm glad you think so.
Is nothing like sounding like a Nazi slogan. It sounds like something from the film Excalibur.
Merlin: Show the sword! Behold! The Sword of Power! Excalibur! Forged when the world was young, and bird and beast and flower were one with man, and death was but a dream!
[to Uther]
Merlin: Speak the words!
Uther Pendragon: One land, one king! That is my peace, Cornwall!
Lord Cornwall: Lord Uther, if I yield to the Sword of Power, what will you yield?
Uther Pendragon: Me yield?
Merlin: He has given, now you must.
Uther Pendragon: The land from here to the sea shall be yours if you enforce the King's will!
Lord Cornwall: Done!
Merlin: [to himself] Good.
Lord Cornwall: King Uther, let us feast together! To my castle!
I would replace 'One Nation' with 'One State', due to the multiple nations within the United Kingdom.
