UKIP: Don't trust the gimmick kings
From the official website:
Lawrence Webb, UKIP's London Mayor candidate, today questioned whether London voters can trust the same old faces on offer with their respective pledges to cut council tax and fares.
On the day that the Mayor of London said he would cut the 'precept' by one per cent in the next financial year, UKIP points out that he has a track record of not keeping his promises.
But Boris Johnson is not alone when it comes to going back on his word to voters, Ken Livingstone is guilty of this too.
Earlier this week Livingstone said he would cut fares by 7% on October 7th should he become Mayor. UKIP asks whether or not Ken can be trusted with this pledge?
Mr Webb, UKIP's London Mayor Candidate, said: "Both Livingstone and Johnson are attempting to bribe the people of London with cheap gimmicks and empty promises but they have short memories as you do not have to search too far to find that they cannot be trusted to honour their pledges.
"The ex-Mayor has promised to cut fares or resign, but let's look at what he has promised in the past. In his 2000 election campaign he promised “to freeze bus fares and keep Tube fares in line with inflation”.
However in his recent autobiography Livingstone wrote: “the cost of running the buses was increasing with the price of oil, so I decided to increase the fares before the [2004] election and then promise they wouldn’t rise by more than inflation".
"This second promise was also broken. The situation with the global economy and continuing volatility in the Middle East will mean that Livingstone will no more be able to keep this promise than the others, although the real promise here of course is that he will resign," said Mr Webb.
"The Mayor's track record is equally poor. Before he came to office he promised that he “would certainly not allow the congestion charge to go up above £8” although he has not been foolish enough to list his broken promises in his memoirs, anyone who drives in to Central London will know this is certainly not a promise he kept as today the congestion charge is 25% higher than when he came to office.
"Both Ken and Boris have form when it comes to turning their campaigning gimmicks into reality. The question is will London voters trust them again to deliver?"
