There are only two countries holding up the Euro at the moment. The first is China who converted a large amount of their US dollar reserves in to Euro s. China is now feeling the economic downturn big time and is already spending its reserves. The second is Germany who can not support the rest of Euro land for much longer. The EU has no reserves left and will not reveal the true state of most countries within Euro land. Italy is in dire trouble with France and Spain close behind.

Anyone buying Euro s at the moment is very misguided.

The value of sterling is linked to the value of the government and the country given what Blair and Brown have done it's amazing that the pound is worth anything

If this country joins the Euro would the last person to leave turn the lights out - actually thinking about it no need to they'll already be out courtesy of the EU and it's directives on "renewables", carbon footprints and nuclear power power stations

we are so screwed

Interesting. New cars come with the EU flag on the number plate by default. Is there any requirement in law for this? Also is there any requirement that the manufacturer replace the number plate free of additional charge if the buyer does not wish to display the EU flag?

Would appreciate an answer, you appear to be knowledgeable on such matters. Thanks.

Indeed we did. This was in the 1970s. It is akin to saying that we made our choice and now we have to stick with it.

Even if that were valid, which it is not - democracy is two way street - we still should have another referendum.

The organisation that the country joined in the 1970s no longer exists. It has formally changed itself into a new organisation with new rules, new requirements and such.

Any substantial modification to the governing constitution of an organisation should trigger notification and approval of the changes by the members.

In the case of the EU, our country itself is the member. In the UK we have a representative democracy, sovereignty and the right to self-determination is held by the people. This means that during any substantial change to our constitution, or that of organisations to which the nation belongs, the people should be asked to vote on the issue.

We should have had referenda for every new treaty.

That is a rather odd argument against having a referendum on membership of another organisation. However since you brought it up, if there are obligations on the participating country then indeed perhaps we should have regular referenda on membership of such.

The DVLA says:

Regulations permit the optional display of the European Symbol of Stars with GB on the extreme left of the number plate.

There are no plans to make the Euro-plate compulsory. The provision has been introduced because the European Council issued a regulation in November 1998 requiring Member States to recognise the Euro-symbol on number plates in place of the traditional oval shaped national identifier sticker for travel within the European Union. It is for individual motorists to decide if they wish to use the new Euro-plate.

UK vehicles travelling in the European Union may still display the traditional oval "GB" sticker. Alternatively number plates incorporating the Euro-symbol may be used instead of the oval sticker. The oval national identifier sticker would still be required for vehicles on journeys outside the European Union.

The Government announced on 28 December 2001 the intention to permit the display of national flags and symbols on vehicle number plates. When the regulations are amended they will provide for the voluntary display of the Union flag, Scottish Saltire, Cross of St George and Red Dragon. Football team crests etc are not allowed.

At least we have other countries supporting the Euro.

Who's gonna bail out the pound when it goes belly up?

The IMF, like it did in 1978 and as it is doing just now for Iceland, Ukraine and Hungary. That is what it was set up to do at Bretton Woods. The EU/ECB will do zilch just as the Bundesbank refused us help in 92 during the ERM debacle.
