Just after Enoch Powell’s ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech, he came to the University where I studied to give a talk on Education policy. Access to the actual speech was by invitation only so I didn’t get in.
But he was given a rowdy welcome when arriving by the lefties (definitely not me).

Obviously there were many police around and on leaving, they duped the lefties and he left by a side door. As chance happens, I found myself almost alone as his car, just pulling away, passed within feet of me so I gave him the supporting thumbs-up sign.

To the best of my knowledge, this was the only time I’ve ever appeared on TV and when I saw it that evening, it seemed that I was angrily shaking my fist at him.

Surely this is a deliberate choice to get some publicity? Seems to have worked, and reinforces UKIP's desired role as an anti-immigration party.

A bit crummy. Out of all the pols in all the parties in all the world, he had to pick Enoch.

Don't get me wrong. I recognize that Powell was an extremely intelligent man. He was reputed to be one of most intelligent MPs of his time. On many issues such as privatisation he was ahead of his time and turned out to be right. However unfairly, though, the main thing he is remembered for by most people today is his Rivers of Blood speech and his visceral opposition to Commonwealth immigration. Therefore these days saying that you admire Enoch Powell comes across like saying "blacks go home!"
