Default Symbolism in the EU flag

The flag is intersting...

Quote:
It seemed the symbolic aspect played an important part in the debate. The outcome was that twelve stars were chosen, because 'twelve' symbolizes a whole. Six doesn't have this connotation. If the flag had twelve stars there could be no suggestion of adding new stars should the Community one day number more than twelve Member states. Twelve has a symbolic value: the twelve signs of the zodiac stand for a whole year and the whole universe,. The twelve months symbolize the whole year and two periods of twelve hours the whole day. The circle of twelve stars on a blue field would represent completeness and diversity, it was said, and thus embody Europe.
The truth is as follows:

Quote:
On an azure field a circle of twelve golden mullets, their points not touching.
This is the heraldic definition of the EU's flag, designed by the devout Roman Catholic, Arsene Heitz.

He intended to show that the citizens of the then "Council of Europe" were under the protection of the Virigin Mary, and so he took his inspiration from images of the Virigin that show her with 12 golden stars above her head against a blue background. (An example can be found at Sisters Of Mary Immaculate & St. Philomena)

This in turn arises from Revelation 12 v.1

Quote:
A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.
The former Council of Europe Secretary-general, Leon Marchal, has said:

Quote:
It's wonderful. It's the corona stellarum duodecim (crown of 12 stars) of the Woman of the Apocalypse.
One must wonder therefore if devout Protestants, and OCV in particular, realise they are in fact endorsing Mariolatry? Even the Koran (Sura 5:116) prohibits worship of the Virgin Mary, so such a concern might apply equally to those of Islamic faith.
