No, I was really careful about this and did everything by the book. Firstly, I was on one occasion forbidden to publish an article on the political career of Commissioner Lazlo Kovacs. When I asked the Commission if they questioned the accuracy of my work they responded by saying that it was not about accuracy, my article would have been "prejudicial to the interests of the institutions".
So working for the institutions does silence us sometimes...
Secondly, my main problem was internal: Our Sec Gen double act, Mork & Mindy, devoted a great deal of their energy (on the days they actually came into work) to finding ways to sack me. My favourite was the attempt to dismiss me for unauthorized possession of a forged official rubber stamp. (I'm not making this up folks!)
So no, I sought permission for everything that was published in my name, when I signed the contract I agreed to abide by the rules, so I did.
Now I don't have to.... shall I tell you about Lazlo Kovacs??
