The implication being that a party that offers help is one that people like and want to return the favour.

So the UKIP needs to look at the things that really get up people's noses, find a few regulations that they think are the doings of the government and let them know that these things are here to stay, whichever party you vote for unless it is a party that wants to quit the EU. That's simple to understand, there is no chance of getting our rights back with the current system. Say to them also that unless Cameron backs the idea of quitting the EU we will have exactly the same regime under his government because the only way he can change things is to leave the EU. If he tried to do it any other way it would be illegal. Most people don't get this point. Help them to understand it and they will talk to others.
Well said Baron! That is the best suggestion I've read on this forum!

And how often do you go down the pub or try telling that to the 1500 pubs that have closed to satisfy your intolerant needs.

You make some very good points, but I think you should keep in mind that UKIP can only obsess about the EU for a limited amount of its campaigning time. People don't want a one-trick pony; the Greens and BNP have done well in keeping one issue at the forefront (environment and immigration/lack of faith in politics respectively) and still campaigning on lots of other issues. Both of those groups also seem to understand the art of getting people to vote for you at elections...

My local (which I use) know my opinion and no pub in my area has closed or has threatened to close. Pubs that only sell beer had a problem long before the no smoking ban came in. In fact the drink driving ban and Supermarkets had most affect on them!

It's a variant of Dick Morris' "Say NO!" strategem:
  • Say NO! to Post Office closures...
  • Say NO! to the Smoking Ban in pubs...
  • Say NO! to throwing Dead Fish back in the sea...

Come back, Dick!!!
