Having had the pleasure of attending the best UKIP conference so far, and seeing the same old detractors **** stirring, I am finally going to kick the habit of this forum and bid you good day.
I see lots of you have strong opinions on the future of the party and yet didn't attend the conference. Ever thought of actually attending such events to find out what is going on? An extraordinary idea i know. My parting comments: 1) We have an incredible leader in Nigel. Excellent in the media. Politically savvy. Understands the need to change the way we fight our case to talk about a positive relationship with Europe from outside the EU (hoo-bloody-ray!). He also recognises the need to weed out the troublemakers. Yes, the party organisation has not been as good as perhaps it could be. Yes, many other legitimate gripes can be made. But does this mean the leader is wrong? NO, because the leadership is a political role and not a managerial one. What a wonderful life Nigel has on the gravy trian, huh? 100 hour weeks; driving the length and breadth of the country, doing media interviews at god awful hours of the day, having to put up with constant moaning and scheming by narrow minded party members. Definitely living the dream! 2) We have an excellent new chairman Paul Nuttal is an excelent candidate. He is energetic, full of ideas, and wants to get a grip on the operations of the party. He also recognises the scale of the task and has sensibly appointed John Arnott as general secretary. A very good move. 3) Young Independence has finally arrived Those who were at the conference cannot failed to have noticed the massive progress of Young Independence. The plans to get into freshers fayers this year and next, debates at universities, birthday card scheme, new literature relevant to issues important to young people, etc, etc. The excellent force of YI within the party, aided by the brilliant Lisa Duffy, will help drive progress. 4) Plans for 2009 Nigel has laid out the party's campaigning plans for next year, including very sensible measures to improve coordination and organisation. He has also recognised the internet, at last, and how UKIP will make use of it as a key plank of campaigning activity. 5) Representation at Westminster The work of our 2 Lords and Bob Spink moves us a major step forward towards establishing our credibility and electability. They continue to cause a nuisance to the europhiles and argue against them. 6) Policies Our policy work is firmly setting the party as a believer in democracy, freedom, justice & small government. Our education policy, for example, was the prime reason for 2 members i know joining the party. This is fundamental if we are to have a voice on domestic issues, which we must if we hope to have a voice in the media. Sticking to the issue of Europe will not achieve this. In conclusion - the party's future looks good. Yes we have problems, and yes we have a very difficult time ahead. How will we fare in next years elections? I don't know, it could see us return more MEPs just as it could see us drop a few, it could go either way i feel. But longer term the right changes are afoot. Members on this forum seem to mistake a problem for catastrophe, an error for a scandal, loyalty for cronyism/autocratic leadership, and squabbles for implosion. Guess what - ths is politics. We are not the only party with internal issues, and ours are by no means the biggest. Wake up and smell the coffee! I am planning to continue to campaign for what I believe and help make UKIP a success. How about you?

You and UKIP need to. Otherwise it will just continue to lose and lose and lose. Locally, nationally, and on a European level. The latter, which may well happen next year, will be the most embarrassing for what most people think is a one-issue party.

WELL SAID HARRY! MORE POWER TO YOUR ELBOW! I fear you are (as I am) wasting your time with a lot of these people here who just enjoy moaning for the sake of it. It's a pity as this forum could be a good talking shop with useful ideas, but it has been hijacked with a deliberate anti-UKIP faction who are determined to put UKIP down at every opportunity. And I will name and shame ... Niall Warry is a classic example. How he can have the brass-neck to stay in UKIP and bellyache the way he does here I do not know. I would not be able to face myself in the mirror in the morning peddling such hypocrisy. Good Luck in your endeavours. Douglas Denny. |

Well said Harry! I had a great time with you and the lads at the Conference and came away with the feeling that a new, very successful chapter in UKIP's history had begun.

Here is a report on the conference from UKIP Surrey. The conference was very well organised by the local branches. The “UKIP Surrey News” stall sold “County Editions” to 11 other counties. We made lots of friends who will write articles for us. UKIP’s counties are magnificent. At the conference they quickly put together the money, authors and delivery staff. They then signed on. The conference was well attended and a great success. Last edited by Toby Micklethwait; 08-09-2008 at 07:32 AM. |

Harry,
Whilst I am sorry to see you go, I think the decision to quit the forum is a wise one if you want to have a successful career in UKIP.
