I have been personally assured these accusations are completely and totally unfounded.

They are so ridiculous and factually inaccurate that I'd be careful if were he about spreading such erroneous information about. The parties to the libel (which in law includes this forum incidentally for promulgating it without checking if indeed factual) - could all end up being party to a serious libel case.

I would retract fast if I were he.

I am not a lawyer but I see nothing in the opening post that could be considered libel. Mr West makes clear that these are accusations (he makes no comment on their accuracy) so it is only libel if the accusations do not exist.

Libel - A statement damaging to a person's reputation deliberately reducing him/her in the eyes of his peers.

Trying to get away with saying it is the responsibility of a third-party is not a defence. Just publishing it can be considered libelous (and malicious) if the statement/rumour is damaging.

Making it so public, and in such a manner as the title: A statement to UKIP members and the Press drawing attention to it, makes it all the more libelous.

It is clearly damaging too in smearing him in the run-up to the MEP hustings/elections. (Is this why it appeared one wonders?)

Douglas: Would you like to name the individual who gave you the assurance that the accusations are unfounded? Another point, you have always counseled against resorting to litigation; have you now a better opinion of lawyers than that held by you previously?

My sources assure me that the accusations are multi-dimensional, and are being investigated by the police on the basis of primary-source information passed to them: not a rumour, gossip or anything similar, but documented accusations. The press also are acting of their own volition to secure more details.

I think that we can safely leave this one to develop, without too much help from the speculators.
