Regarding London, being my region...

I see Paul Wiffen is standing in Scotland rather than London and Lawrence Webb is standing in East Midlands rather than London. I won't speculate about current facts I don't know but am very surprised Lawrence Webb is not standing in London. I would've thought he'd be voted in 2nd place after Gerard Batten in the members ballot. I'll bet he is kicking himself right now.

Marta Andreasen is unlikely to get my support. Being from the libertarian wing of the party I'll likely vote Batten 1 & Worstall 2. Atkinson and Robson likely being 3 and 4 without any current preference between them.

I note that John Moran is not a candidate but presume C_Steam will continue to ignore/make a joke out of the questions and responses to his topic which included,
Quote:
we are told that the ever-faithful Mr Zuckerman and Mr Moran have accepted positions on that list
Nobody ever having claimed that Mr Zuckerman was not a likely candidate BTW. He is also unlikely to get my support. Despite the claims of leadership opposition I'll be amazed if Batten is not top of the London list. As Webb is not on the list I have absolutely no idea who is likely to be 2nd. I'd be interested in who other forum members think the London members will give that position to.

Can someone explain why certain candidates are standing in two regions. We have Lynette Afshar standing in the East and West Midlands and Marta Andreasen standing in the South East and London, is there a shortage of candidates in these areas?

Can somebody confirm that Marta Andreasen is now permanently resident in either the UK or Gibraltar?

Marta Andreasen is obviously on the list in London to try and oust Gerard Batten but will get invaluable publicity for the SE candidates by also being on the list there. The lists just prove that Nigel is now putting his people in place to even further tighten his grip on the party.

And no John Whittaker in the North West.

I understand that 4 people have an appeal pending with regard to the Eastern Region Selection so why is this list printed? I also note that Stuart Gulleford, who I understand is under police investigation, is on the list, just what is going on?

With regard to Marta Andreasen:

The EU's own rules clearly state: European Commission - Your Europe - Citizens - EU Parliament elections
Quote:

The requirements for being entitled to vote or stand as a candidate in the Member State of residence are:
  • EU citizenship;
  • residence in the Member State where the vote is cast or where the person concerned is standing as a candidate;
  • compliance with the provisions applicable to nationals of the Member State of residence as regards the right to vote or to stand as a candidate (principle of equality between national and other EU voters).
It is up to each Member State to indicate, if necessary, which persons are to be considered as nationals.
No-one is allowed to vote more than once or to stand as a candidate in more than one Member State at the same election.
EU voters cannot be entered on the electoral roll of the Member State of residence unless they have previously expressed the wish to do so. Anyone opting to vote in the Member State of residence is no longer entitled to vote in their home country . If voting is compulsory in the country of residence, EU voters who are entered on the electoral roll of that country are obliged to vote
From the 2004 Electoral Commission guidance (unfortunately, now no longer on the EC website) (http://www.electoralcommission.org.u..._N__S__W__.pdf):
Quote:
Who can be a candidate?
4.2 To be eligible to stand as a candidate for election to the European Parliament in the United Kingdom, you must be on the day you are nominated and on polling day, 10 June 2004:

• at least 21 years old; and

a British citizen or a citizen of the Irish Republic or the Commonwealth, or a citizen of another member state of the European Union who is resident in the UK or Gibraltar.

4.3 You must also make sure you are not otherwise disqualified from being a member of the European Parliament (see below, Why can’t I be a candidate?).

Why can’t I be a candidate?

4.4 Certain people are disqualified from being elected as a member of the European Parliament.

You cannot be a candidate if:

• You are a member of the UK Government;

• You are a member of certain European bodies (see Appendix 4);

• You are disqualified from membership of the House of Commons;

• You are disqualified from standing as an MP in a parliamentary constituency that overlaps with the European electoral region you want to stand as a candidate in;

• You are disqualified from membership of the Gibraltar House of Assembly;

• You are a citizen of a member state of the European Union whose own laws prohibit its citizens from standing for election in another state.

4.5 It is an offence to consent to being nominated as a candidate for election at a European Parliament general election:

in more than one Member State; or

in more than one electoral region, either as an individual candidate or a candidate on a list submitted by a registered political party; or

as an individual candidate and a candidate on a list submitted by a registered political party, whether in that same region or another; or

as a candidate on lists submitted by more than one registered political party in the same electoral region.

Advice

The full range of disqualifications for candidates is complex, and some exceptions may also apply. You are advised to consult the relevant legislation to ensure that none of the relevant disqualifications applies, and check with the RRO for clarification on any points of confusion.
UK electoral law specifies that the candidate should not only be resident in the UK or Gibraltar but also be registered on the electoral roll. Marta does not appear to be registered on the current electoral roll in either her own or her husband's surname. In fact, in January 2008, her appeal against the EU Civil Service Tribunal's decision of 8 November 2007 lists her as resident in Barcelona. She is using a Spanish lawyer for that appeal.

So why is she on the party list at all?

Note that, for the 2004 Euro Elections,
Quote:
4.5 It is an offence to consent to being nominated as a candidate for election at a European Parliament general election:

in more than one Member State; or

in more than one electoral region, either as an individual candidate or a candidate on a list submitted by a registered political party; or

as an individual candidate and a candidate on a list submitted by a registered political party, whether in that same region or another; or

as a candidate on lists submitted by more than one registered political party in the same electoral region.
Those who have volunteered to stand in more than one region are going to have to make a choice, assuming they're lucky enough to be selected for multiple regions.
