See also: Shared space - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. It actually cuts the number of traffic related injuries (as proven by a Dutch town).

maybe so, but a reference to where the thing can be read would be helpful!

Aaaargh! where is the reference? why are we trying to discuss something that does not appear to have a corporeal existence?

Otherwise, as long as the cars are not abandoned, what does it matter? People keep their own cars outside their houses for months on end. I don't suppose it would make much difference to Heathrow. You could leave your car somewhere but you would have to walk to the terminal. These days you can book a week's parking with courtesy buses for £10-20 online. What infuriates me is where arbitary restrictions have been placed on streets abutting commuter rail stations. I could name a few which are like a ghost town during the day when all the residents have taken their cars to work anyway.

Aardvark: I think that we should confine our discussion to yellow lines, as a means by which some progress might be made. Councils agree to allow multi-storey car parking in congested areas of a town or city. Sounds all very good on the surface, but look deeper! In order to obtain the best price for the land, freehold/leasehold, they exclude street parking within a certain area of the proposed multi-storey car park. When you deduct that parking exclusion from the 'additional' parking spaces created by NCP, or whoever, the actual increase created by the muli-parking is very small. It is a triumph for affectation over reality. The parking spaces removed were often free, all the newly created ones are 'charged'. That is something which we as a Party could address. (A good local issue)
Moan number two: in many town areas residents can obtain their own designated parking outside their own houses. I have some sympathy for the plight of residents in some areas, but 'resident parking' has a very unfortunate downside. En masse, those residents depart for work, leaving street after street virtually deserted of cars. At the same time, shoppers/visitors are searching for parking spaces which do not exist. I believe that resident-parking has some merit, but it should apply only between the hours of, say, 5pm and 8am. I believe that this would cause littlle inconvenience for residents, while increasing parking spaces for others. Those two separate issues which I have identified, would mitigate the parking-problem to some extent. That's all I have to say m'lud. |

I seem to remember an article about shared space on the UKIP website, around February I think, but cannot trace it. Having a dumb day here it is: UK Independence Party - Driving towards freedom Last edited by Rosie; 09-07-2008 at 10:06 AM. |
