Last night I went to a party in a VERY Tory area. Virtually everyone I spoke to was very much a traditional tory and many were actually party members. Now I don't mix in this sort of circle generally because I live in a very working class area and am from Liverpool originally and Scouse Tories are as rare as good news for Gordon Brown. What I found was with only one qualified exception ( which I will come to) they all said, although they would normally vote tory in a general election, they would be voting UKIP in the Euros. The qualified exception came from a chap who said he would only vote tory for Daniel Hannan as he was "sound". The rest of them accepted the Conservative party were "useless" on the EU.
It certainly cheered me up after listening to the BNP members and stooges and the disillusioned exUKIPpers on here saying we were going to get murdered next year. Bring it on! |

That's great news.
It's easy for people to become brainwashed into thinking UKIP is going nowhere when you have Tories, BNPers, Populists (whatever they are), and other parties right left and centre posting negative comments about it, eagerly anticipating its supposedly "imminent" downfall. The key is to ignore all the speculation and focus on the facts. Yes we did poorly in Henley, but Crewe/Nantwich wasn't a complete disaster. We still came fourth and got 0.2% more than Farage predicted. By the sounds of your post as well, we probably won't do anywhere near as badly in the Euro Elections as people think. If we lose all of our MEPs then it is time to start panicking but instead on submitting to failure at the first signs of bad news we should be asking ourselves what we can do to turn it around, when crucially we are needed by Britain more than ever to get us out of the EU, without all the racial baggage that another party would bring.

I doubt the BNP will mount a real challenge for the Euros for the simple fact that they are too small and poorly funded. They do get very good results for their size, but this is because they are good at focusing their resources (money, people) into those areas where they expect to do well. In all likelihood next years Euro elections will coincide with County Council and Unitary authority elections which means the BNP will be stretched incredibly thin on the ground. Either they concede the County and Unitary elections to focus on the Euros, or they concede the Euros to focus on the County and Unitary elections. My bet is they will concede the Euros, because these require a strong effort throughout an entire region whereas focusing on those County and Unitary authority elections where their support is strongest is more in fitting with their modus operandi and better suited to combination of good organization but lack of resources. Don't worry, they'll keep spinning faster than Tony Blair media advisors. |

Talk is easy. Will such views convert to votes when it matters? we shall see.

Let's hope he's right. Few enough people vote in these elections and the good news - easy to forget when you are 'involved' - is that most people do not know what a hash some of our MEPs have made of their term in office.

We have already achieved a good result locally pushing the Lib-Dems into 8 of 11 4th places. With just under 10%, average vote. We see no reason why this cannot be improved on in the 2009 Unitary Elections and the Euro's. We in Wiltshire will be working towards that goal, not sitting around decrying the party.

Mikeuk, I truly believe that if we ignore most of what is posted on here and get out amongst the people, highlight the cynicism of the European message we can pick up vital votes. I am hearing rumours locally with regard to Honda that could well explode into a major reason for the people of Swindon and Wiltshire to rally against the EU.
