Alicia has just come in. She says Quebec House. Duel in 17** something. Probably a different duel; or my guide had it all wrong. Not so busy at dawn. Good spectator sport anyway. Spectators unlikely to want to get in the way ..... !! DED. - Last edited by douglas denny; 04-07-2008 at 06:09 PM. |

Well there may have been another duel there, but in those days Point was not a respectable area for gentlemen.
No police or other authorities to stop the fun, but plenty of washerwomen, mudlarks, fishermen to watch and hurl abuse. I will have to check with my copy of Gates's History of Portsmouth |

To sum up, it seems to me that a UKIP government should allow gentlemen to settle affairs of honour in the old, effective way without police interference.
In days gone by participation in duels was restricted by social class and rank. In the spirit of democracy I advocate that all such restrictions should be removed and that females should also be permitted to take part.

I was once involved in a duel with foils, first to draw blood.
It was on the account of somebody's buffoonary - not my own I hasten to add. Sadly I was forced to withdraw my statement when it became apparent the the other chap's second would himself call me out - and he both absolutely serious and was a far better fencer. His reasoning was that I was taking advantage of the glowering rage of a erstwhile friend, and thus was myself beng dishonourable. He also infornmed the local constabulary of the time and place of the meeting. That being said being arrested for duelling would have made an interesting addendum to my CRB check. |

But Aardvark and Gawain are so gentlemanly and polite, a duel between them would be a rather temperate affair. Perhaps they could appear as the warmup act to the main attraction - a duel between Bob FM and Geoffrey Collier!

Ukipmember1, Irony is wasted on you. This whole thread is tongue in cheek, I think. Anyway, how would gentlemen solve disputes in the twenty-first century? Conkers is a H&S risk. Hopscotch is racist. Knives are about to be banned. Handguns are illegal. The courts are expensive and anyway gentlemen don't really go there unless the other person is a complete cad (I am a gentleman and would only sue complete cads).
