Law and Order Conference, Woodbridge, 31st May 2008
Welcome by UKIP MP Dr Bob Spink Ladies and Gentlemen, it is a great privilege to address you today, albeit remotely from Westminster , where I have the pleasure to represent the millions of people in Britain who support our sound UKIP policies. As more and more prisoners are released early, because of jail overcrowding, more and more teenagers are tragically injured and murdered on our streets. Is it any wonder the fear of crime has risen to epidemic levels under successive, soft, Labour and Conservative Governments. The criminal justice system is now a basket case. It’s failing the public and is also binding youngsters into a life of crime. 90% of young offenders re-offend within two years, the system is part of the problem not part of the solution, and politically correct politicians are to blame. Parts of Britain are becoming lawless. And the government’s response is to tell judges to cut custodial sentences. When will they learn that Banged-up villains don’t do crime? The solution of overcrowding is solved not by letting people out early, but by building more prisons and seriously increasing deterrents, that means making prisons places villains want to avoid, not stay inside. We need to punish, rehabilitate and reform offenders, something that cannot be done in overcrowded prisons or with soft community sentences. Soft-on-crime Labour and the politically correct Tories have failed the people of Britain . The Human Rights Act is a charter for allowing criminals to avoid serving their sentences and that is why it is UKIP’s policy to repeal it. Another popular, sound UKIP policy. Working closely with the superb and united UKIP team, I’ve set out several such policies on domestic issues in the House of Commons in recent, and there are many more to come over the weeks and months. UKIP policy is that only first time, non violent offenders should get early release, and only then, when they have served at least 75% of their sentence and shown significant progress in education, skills training and overcoming addiction. We would also impose a 'three strikes and you’re out' policy which significantly inflates punishment for repeat offending. We must send a message that criminal behaviour will not be tolerated any more in Britain . And the best deterrent of all is increasing the probability of being caught. So we would get more police officers out of the station and onto the streets. UKIP is a great supporter of the police; they need more political backing in the tough job they have to do to keep society safe. UKIP would cut politically-driven policing targets and bureaucracy, and free the police to do their job. And there’s a balance to be found with new technology in fighting crimes and individual freedoms. The DNA of convicted criminals and details of sex offenders should be held centrally. But DNA is being held for innocent people and this gives rise to many concerns. The national ID card system could cause more problems than it solves, it will cost a fortune and may not even work with current technologies. Why this government think they should be trusted with our personal details, which could see someone’s identity fabricated, is a mystery. How long would it take before they loose the data and it is sold on for criminal use? I welcome people to this country when they have something to offer, I applaud immigrants when they make a contribution that is in Britain ’s interests. But prison overcrowding is not helped by the large number of EU nationals, let in without any immigration controls by this government. Over 2,000 are now in British prisons. For example, a Romania man was recommended for deportation on release from prison, but he remained in the UK and then led an identity fraud gang, netting £643,000 from the nasty crime which ruined many innocent people’s lives, one of the largest such crimes in British history. It costs £38,000 per annum to keep a prisoner locked up. So EU nationals in jail cost UK tax payers over £76 million per year. Once out of the EU political project, UKIP would deport these criminals, freeing up prison places and reducing crime. This is not rocket science! Please allow me to sum up. Many problems stem from the EU, not least the £15B EU membership cost, the loss of UK jobs, the loss of our democracy and supremacy of our Parliament, the ability of all MPs to make law and help people, is falling month on month year on year., the destruction of our fishing industry and fish stocks, the uncontrolled immigration putting pressure on housing and public services and as I explained, our prisons. We have been failed by successive Conservative and Labour governments which refuse to mend our broken system. The fact is that it would be easy to withdraw from the EU political project and to trade and co-operate with all countries, including those in Europe , thereby returning democracy and power to our Parliament and people. Only the UK Independence Party is able to force this positive change. And that is why I was honoured and delighted to join UKIP. |

Maybe he was doing something else, on a notoriously quiet day in Westminster, like watching TV. |

No Charlie and others want to see the demise of UKIP because the new 'party' is moving forward something they cannot stomach, and under a leader most of them complain about. Nigel must be doing something right.
