Within a few days in June will hear whether the attempt to impose the EU Constitution upon us, albeit under a new name, has succeeded.

The first battle will be in the High Court, when Stuart Wheeler fights his case. His argument is that he had a legitimate expectation that the government would honour its general election pledge to hold a referendum on the constitutional treaty before ratification. Unbelievably, the Speaker of the House of Commons, Mr Michael Martin (better known as Gorbals Mick) has intervened. A second, even more expensive QC has been taken on using taxpayers’ money. The argue that Mr Wheeler is trying to overturn parliamentary privilege – a bit rich, this, from the very people who are so keen to see our parliament so devalued.

The case will take place on 9 and 10 June. We do not yet known whether a judgement will be delivered immediately. Whatever the outcome, I take my hat off to Stuart Wheeler for bringing the case and to Speaker Martin for upping the ante.

Meanwhile, almost unnoticed by our newspapers, the House of Lords has been holding a proper debate on the Treaty of Lisbon. The most remarkable intervention to date has been from Lord Owen, especially when you consider that he led the breakaway SDP on the basis that Labour was anti-EEC. Owner said this treaty was being imposed upon our people against their will. In fact his whole speech could easily have come from UKIP.

Our own two peers have been very active indeed and are a great credit to us. A UKIP amendment calling for a referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU was voted on this week. What did the Lib Dems do? Remember that they abstained in the House of Commons on a referendum on the treaty, saying they wanted an in-or-out referendum. Nick Clegg went on the Today programme saying that he “passionately wanted a real debate”. Passionate chap, Mr Clegg! In the Lords the Lib Dems abstained on the UKIP amendment, showing what a worthless and dishonest party they are.

The final opportunity to vote for a referendum on the treaty will be on 11 June. With a chamber stuffed with ex-EU commissioners and Blair cronies, please don’t hold your breath.

The last big event will be on 12 June, when Ireland will be the only country to hold a referendum on the treaty. Needless to say, the political class is doing all it can to ensure a one-sided debate. Our pals at the European Commission are also active, spending large sums of taxpayers’ money on a series of well-advertised seminars. No prizes for guessing what these seminars conclude.

Through the Independence and Democracy Group we have done our bit in supporting our Irish member, Kathy Sinnott. By working with our fellow EU sceptics we have sent a mailshot to every house in Ireland outlining what they stand to lose with this treaty. The “No” side is fighting a very active campaign and must not be written off. We wish them well.

Of course, there is a further possibility of this treaty being stopped. The Queen could refuse to grant the Royal Assent. But perhaps that is asking too much.

The timing of all this is designed so as a ratification vote in the Commons, a Loss by Wheeler (the Judges will have been specifically appointed to ensure this.) The cunning ploy by HMG was to allow it to go to full hearing, no accusations then of HMG interference. What researchers need to do is to examine the history of the Judges to see what their EU views are. Then the Irish vote with ' 2 failures ringing in their ears', changes the odds in Favour of the Irish Government immensely.
