Default UKIP's smoking pledge could win them next election

Odds Slashed On Gordon Brown To Be Out This Year

Odds Slashed On Gordon Brown To Be Out This Year

23 MAY 2008

Bookies William Hill have slashed their odds about Gordon Brown ceasing to be
Prime Minister this year from 25/1 when he took office to current odds of just
7/4. The betting odds update follows Labour's disastrous result in the Crewe
by-election.

William Hill are now offering 6/5 that Brown will not lead Labour into the next
General Election. The Conservatives are now priced as 1/3 favourites to win the next General Election - the shortest odds they have ever been since losing power. Labour are
9/4, the longest they have been for over ten years.

******
The Liberal Democrats are at 66/1 and UKIP are 1000/1 outsiders with William
Hill to win the next General Election - but these odds could tumble as more
smokers and annoyed pub-regulars learn of UKIP's manifesto pledge to repeal the
smoking ban.

******

With Gordon Brown's Leadership of the Party under pressure William Hill have
installed David Miliband as 5/2 favourite to succeed him, and also offer 7/1
Alan Johnson and Jack Straw, 8/1 Ed Balls, 9/1...

SNIPPED

14 million smokers and 6 million tolerant no smoking friends, is an awful lot of votes to dismiss and there are many pro choice groups in the UK including publicans, who recently voted UKIP as their preferred party at 67%, leaving the Tories trailing at 22%. Do dismiss this potential vote would be irresponsible, which it is in our Law and Order document to amend the regulations not actually repeal the ban.

You'd have a point if 14 million + 6 million tolerant no smoking friends all voted! A huge number of smokers are too young to vote! In my opinion if UKIP smokers are hoping that lifting the ban on smoking will win UKIP seats, then I think they're living in a fools paradise!

I'm a real anti-smoker. I hate it, and I will always choose a pub that enforces a ban (which I can do, as I live in Belgium, where the ban is enforced selectively).

But I think the ban as imposed in the UK is wrong, for a number of reasons, most of which have been argued well on this forum.

But to fight an election on this particular ground??? Here we are entering Monster Raving Loony Party territory. This is so peripheral. I think the party policy is correct, albeit based not on any real evaluation of the issue, but on the fact that Nigel Farage is an enthusiastic smoker, but if we highlight this argument we will look rather stupid.
