From the official website:
The UK Independence Party came fourth in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election on 22 May, confirming the party's position as the fourth political force in the country. Candidate Mike Nattrass gained 2.22% of the vote in a seat UKIP did not contest in 2005. More... |

If that's mission accomplished, then UKIP are forever doomed to **** poor performance. All "other" parties have to think seriously how they can break this wizard or oz style con trick. Accepting 2.2% as some sort of victory is just delusional.

If it has become our mission to simply standstill, then we are in trouble.
Mission accomplished would be winning the seat or at least an unexpectedly good result. That said, it's not bad to standstill - at least we're not going backwards. However we should and must be moving forward for us to claim this is a good result.

Do you think getting 2.2% of people who can be bothered to vote, in an election where considerable effort and resource were deployed is standing still?
I don't. I think it is going backwards and it isn't a problem specific to UKIP. The old parties and their media friends have once again lured the masses who can be bothered to vote, into thinking they are the only choices. Until that nut is cracked, you are just ******* in the wind.

You can blame the media all you like, but UKIP and the other smaller parties, simply haven't upped their game enough. 2004 showed that when you get it right in some way, the media will side with you.

If you take a look at the results, the bulk of that 2.2% came out of Labour's vote share. Labour dropped 18.2% and the Conservatives gained 16.9%. The only logical place for the remaining vote share to have gone is to UKIP.
Since we've not stood in this seat before, this is good progress in that seat.
