Mind you.
NF was a member of the Conservative Party till 1990 when Margaret Thatcher got the push.

So where were many other UKIPers then? I presume they were helping Mrs Thatcher become the new leader of the CONServative Party?

I don't quite know what to make of this result, but I agree with the points people have made regarding the campaign. The UKIP need to be about much more than leaving the EU. Most conscious voters have got that message already and whilst I agree many people haven't got that message yet, I think UKIP need to broaden their appeal by equally pushing other policies.

As important leaving the EU is, I really do feel people regard UKIP as "them lot who want to leave the EU" which would be right, but do they know anymore about UKIP? Probably not

The new policies are a step in the right direction but there is still much work to do with regards to the campaigning

Possibly not a bad result in the context of things. We cannot just expect to turn up at a by election and do well. Seats have to be worked for years to achieve results.

My own seat of Birmingham Yardley was first identified as a target by the Lib Dem sometime around 1985. They didn't win the seat until 2005 after 20 years of hard work.

Not a great result - but not a bad one either.

The LibDems, who have long been experts at fighting by-elections, saw their share of the vote actually falling from 18.6% to 14.6%.

The last time the Greens contested the constituency (1992) they got 1.1% of the vote, as opposed to 0.9% this time.

UKIP did considerably better than the Greens, despite the fact that the Greens have been around a lot longer than UKIP, and their policies are lot better known.

UKIP's share of the vote in this by-election was roughly the same as their national share in the UK General Election in 2005. The Greens were down slightly, the LibDems considerably.

Yes - the result is disappointing, and there is a lot of work to be done - but to have expected much better would simply have been unrealistic.

UKIP's leadership are no longer anti-EU but like the gravy train they now enjoy at the expence of those genuine people against the EU.

There's the small issue of your 2006 accounts which weren't provided to the Electoral Commission until the middle of the following, year, allegedly because Nick Griffin and friends skimmed off a lot of money from the party to fund their lifestyles and the resulting giant hole in the parties accounts took some time to hide. Just curious? Have the 2007 accounts been submitted to the EC yet?

That was dealt with and it was because Kenny Smith failed to hand over reciepts, he was then expelled from the party. The accountants accepted this as did the EC.
As for the 2007 accounts I dont believe they have to be declared yet, have UKIP handed in theirs?

Default Talk is Cheap

There is an awful lot of negativity as usual. The fact remains that UKIP are the 4th party. We now have to build on that. In Swindon we are working very hard to ensure we are ready for next years Wiltshire Unitaries and the EU elections. Perhaps those who doubt ought to read some of the policies.
· UKIP will leave the political EU and trade globally and freely. We will re-embrace today’s fast-growing Commonwealth and we will encourage UK manufacturing so that we make things again.
· We will freeze immigration for five years, speed up deportation of up to a million illegal immigrants by tripling the numbers engaged in deportations, and have ‘no home no visa’ work permits to ease the housing crisis.
· We will have a grammar school in every town. We will restore standards of education and improve skills training. Student grants will replace student loans.
· We will radically reform the working of the NHS with an Insurance Fund, whilst upholding the ‘free at the point of care’ principles. We will bring back matrons and have locally run, clean hospitals.
· We will give people the vote on policing priorities, go back to proper beat policing and scrap the Human Rights Act. We will have sentences that mean what they say.
· We will take 4.5 million people out of tax with a simple Flat Tax (with National Insurance) starting at £10,000. We will scrap Inheritance Tax, not just reform it and cut corporation taxes.
· We will say No to green taxes and wind farms. To avert a major energy crisis, we will go for new nuclear power plants on the same existing site facilities and for clean coal. We will reduce pollution and encourage recycling.
· We will make welfare simpler and fairer, introduce ‘workfare’ to get people back to work, and a new citizens pension and private pensions scheme insurance.
· We will support our armed forces with more spending on equipment, military homes and medical care. We will save our threatened warships and add 25,000 more troops.
· We will be fair to England, with an English Parliament of English MPs at Westminster. We will replace assembly members like MSPs with MPs. And we will promote referenda at local and national levels.
· We will make customer satisfaction number one for rail firms – not cost cutting and will look seriously at reopening some rail lines that Beeching closed. We will make foreign lorries pay for British roads with a ‘Britdisc’ – and we will stop persecuting motorists.
Last, but never least, we will bring in fair prices and fair competition for our suffering farmers, and restore traditional British fishing and territorial waters

The BNP also wishes to bring back Grammar schools. Unlike PC Dave and his chums, the BNP believes that the education system in this country needs to be totally reformed and not just given some minor patch-up treatment. Under a BNP government there would be a Grammar school in every town that wants one. The education system must take into account the inherent abilities and aptitudes of each child.
