David Fraser is the author of the best selling book 'A Land Fit for Criminals'. David also helped compile UKIP's Law and Order policy document.
Key points from his speech: What should our government do to properly protect us from crime? Start being honest and provide the public with accurate information. Acknowledge rather than hide the true extent of crime, so the public are informed rather than mislead. Stop using sentencing methods (i.e. community supervision) for persistent offenders which have blatantly failed to protect the public and or reform the criminals concerned. Start using prison for more repeat offenders and make sentences longer as the evidence shows this works both to protect the public and to persuade criminals to reform. Stop misleading the public with statements that the UK sends more people to prison than other European countries. Start to disseminate to the public the more accurate analysis of prison numbers based on our crime rate (and not the general population). Stop issuing anti-prison propaganda. Foster a climate of opinion which supports a massive increase in the number of prisons. Start to display moral courage in adopting sentencing policies which properly protect the public from highly dangerous criminals. For example, abolish parole and all other early release arrangements. Restrict judge’s discretion to two choices: apply either a real life sentence or a formula based on 80 years minus the offender’s age. |
