I support those members in the East who put Country before personal gain.
As far as the MEP candidates are concerned I will have to wait until we get the list. However, as you can imagine I will not be voting for Titford's so-called heir if he gets that far. |

1. The meeting in question was held at the Troxy in a side room. It was intended for Eastern Counties members although I was told that other members from other areas may attend. Imagine my surprise when Titford and Gulleford refused access to Bannerman and Batten. It turned out that both were rumoured to have MEP ambitions in the East. Because of this Gulleford asked Titford to deny them access. Imagine a situation where you ban Bannerman, a Suffolk PPC and Deputy Leader from a UKIP meeting! On another two occasions Titford has referred to Gulleford as "my successor". Titford has no right to do this. It is up to the members to decide who succeeds him. I didn't know that Jeffrey had moved south - to Sussex, I hear - but would like to put in a good word for him.
I found him to be a sincere and hard-working man for whom it was a pleasure to work. He had to deal with the outbreak of hostilities between Michael Holmes and the 'NEC Nine', led by Tony Scholefield, which erupted within three months of his election to the European Parliament. The stormy conference, which effectively was a vote of no confidence in Michael Holmes, followed in January 2000 - and I recall that Jeffrey made a statesmanlike speech during the debate. He tried to mediate between the two 'sides'. The dispute was exceptionally bitter. After becoming Party Leader in April 2000 (if memory serves), he had to contend with Nigel Farage effectively trying to run the party and making most of the decisions. Nigel's selling of a BBC video, apparently in breach of copyright, was the last straw for Bryan Smalley, who promptly resigned as Party Secretary. I'd like to think that my time with him, which ended in February 2001, was reasonably productive; a lot of people were kind enough to say so at the time. He was a very fair employer and cared about his country and the success of the party. In fairness to other names on this thread, both Donald Davidson as Chairman of C.I.B. Essex and Stuart Gulleford as their Press Officer contributed to Essex C.I.B. being easily the largest C.I.B. branch in the country, with well over 300 members at its peak. Both men were helpful to me whilst I worked for Jeffrey. There were many well-attended Essex C.I.B. branch meetings at The Saracen's Head. In October 1999, just three months after Jeffrey was elected M.E.P., Donald organised a highly effective public meeting on Europe at which I think around 250 attended. That was the start of my anti-metric 'awakening'. I could scarcely believe that Britain was about to make it a crime to sell in pounds and ounces - and distributed, on behalf of U.K.I.P., a leaflet on the subject. It was read by a Leigh-on-Sea butcher, the late Dave Stephens. On 3 January 2000, Dave was handed an enforcement notice by Southend-on-Sea Unitary Authority, ordering him to cease using his Imperial scales. To which he blew a raspberry. On 6 January 2000, Jeffrey Titford paid in a personal cheque for £50 at the NatWest Bank in Chelmsford, and thus the 'UKIP Metric Martyrs Fund' was begun --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Mr Bennett, I understand what you are saying but recent events in the East prove that Jeffrey Titford no longer have the interests of the party at heart, even if he did several years ago. He is using his position to promote Gulleford as his heir. He also approved the sending of an email attacking UKIP members in the East because they may threaten Gulleford's chances of selection. Many would say that this is an abuse of his position. He accused the speakers of self promotion which could be taken as an attack on Gerard Batten and David Campbell Bannerman as they were listed as speakers. This was done only a few days before important London and local elections. This hardly helped the party. He also ignored the NEC who said the conference could go ahead. Are these the actions of a man with UKIP's interests at heart?
On a personal note I feel that perhaps John West could have used more local speakers rather than the big guns but as I say that is just my opinion. Last edited by fordtit; 10-05-2008 at 07:19 PM. |

II too would like to put a good word for him, 'Stop backing a looser, and do the job you were elected to do, or retire now to your cosy pad down south'. |

I would like to see more women standing in both Westminster and EU elections. I was quite impressed by Alison West at the immigration conference and hope she has put her name forward. Does anyone know if she has? |
