Election

London Election 2008

As I am sure you are aware from all the intense press coverage and debate, the London Mayoral election is taking place on Thursday 1 May, 2008.

At the last London Mayoral election in 2004 the Evangelical Alliance in partnership with London Churches hosted a series of focus groups, published a booklet outlining the key political issues facing London, and hosted an election Husting with the main candidates: Ken Livingstone The Labour Party Candidate; Ram Gidoomal from the Christian Peoples Alliance; Steve Norris of the Conservative Party; Simon Hughes from Liberal Democrats and Darren Johnson, Green Party Candidate.

The booklet, Faith, Work and City can still be obtained in hard copy from the public affairs team at the Evangelical Alliance. Please e-mail your requests to pub-aff@eauk.org or download it as a PDF.

This year the Mayoral Hustings event sponsored by the Evangelical Alliance, in partnership with Premier Christian Radio, and supported by London Churches, is being kindly hosted by St Martin-in-the-Fields Church, Trafalgar Square on Wednesday 23 April, 6-8pm. Doors open at 5pm. The candidates from the same five parties that were invited in 2004 have been asked to attend this years event.

At the beginning of the Hustings each candidate will be invited to make an opening statement on what they think makes a good city. (This was a key question for the Commission on Urban Life and Faith in its report in May 2006, Faithful Cities, which covers many of the issues of concern to churches in London.)

Attendees will then get the opportunity to ask the Mayoral candidates their questions. This could be the only time in four years that you will be able to put your question to your future Mayor.

There will be no charge for this event, but seats are limited so please come early to avoid disappointment.

Please also show your support by inviting yourself and your friends on the hustings Facebook group.

That the Greens are invited to a hustings but not UKIP ?
We got twice the votes last time - despite bias like this.

Fair play.

Remind them that UKIP has an MP now too.

Exclamation

I wrote them, and received the following prompt response:

Quote:
Dear Mr *********,

Thank you for your interest in our Mayoral Hustings event.

This hustings has invited five parties' candidates; the same five parties that attended the previous churches hustings in 2004 and in 2000. We do not have the time or the space at the Hustings this evening to have every minority party that is standing for the Mayoral election. UKIP was not invited to be on the platform. Everyone is welcome to attend and ask the candidates a question from the floor.

With warm regards,

Gareth

Send a UKIP delegation in (including candidate) and then proceed to ask questions directly to him on the floor.

The Evangelical Alliance is a charity, isn't arbitary discrimination against one party political activity and therefore against the Charity commission rules ?
If they were to say only the top 3 candidates fair enough but the Greens and not UKIP !!

They've had a follow up:

Quote:
Dear Mr Wallace,

Thank you for your reply.

We appreciate that you do not have the space to invite all minority candidates.
What we do not understand why the Greens were invited but not UKIP ?
Last time UKIP got twice the votes for Mayoral Candidate that the Greens did. We also got 3 times as many votes at the last General Election.

I really can not understand the logic behind this and as a Christian am quite dismayed.
After all the Bible says :-
"1My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism."
BibleGateway.com: Search for a Bible passage in over 35 languages and 50 versions.

Isn't this what the EA is doing ? I have many friends in UKIP who are not Christians - this really is not a good example of Christian love.

Yours in Christ

David Holland

Cool Humpty Dumpty evangelicals!

I'm not an evangelical so wouldn't know how to complain to such an organisation. Gareth Wallace obviously thinks the Christian Peoples Alliance is in with a chance to beat Labour at the general election.

Major minor or minor major. Mr.Wallace is another Humpty Dumpty type!
